I have an 84 GSL-SE with a stock exhaust system that is most likely clogged. I was thinking of upgrading to the full Racing Beat system (headers, two presilencers, and PowerPulse muffler) for a new exhaust and some added horsepower.

However, I don't want the Mound to sound anything like rice. I would prefer to keep the sound as nice and mellow and quiet as stock as possible. So how does that compare to the Racing Beat system?

And, how much horsepower can that add?

i don't have a gsl-se but the racing beat makes a alot more power but it is louder than stock by a bit. but just bolt up the header and start it now that is loud.

 

Mine sounds VERY nice. It has a throaty, not farty tone. It's stock quiet until you jump on the throttle. I got about 20 horsies or so off my system, but I think my actuators were stuck shut, so it could have been a little more.

My system (2 years old) will be for sale shortly, since I can't use it with the TII engine I'm dropping in my SE.

I've tried 2 other systems, way to loud, the RB is truly the best sounding/performing system for the RX-7

I even tried a ULTRA free flow muffler on the RB header and pre silencer.
All I gained was noise.

 

OK, so it seems to be not too much louder than stock.....what about the fumes? Are they worse since you are removing the cat and air pump, etc? Although I do think that I have an exhaust leak now, since I'm getting some serious fumes in the cabin, the exhaust sounds a bit leaky, and it's running rich, and I get sleepy when I drive.

I also get a "pop pop pop pop pop pop" when I let off the throttle...colgged cats? Too rich? TPS?

I got rid of my backfire when I pulled my injectors and had them cleaned.
As for fumes, yes it can be a bit much with no air pump or cats.
but only when parked, on the road I've never noticed it.

 

I have the RB Street Port (that's what RB used to call the system you refer to anyway) exhaust system on my '85 GS. I think it is much quieter, and throatier than just the RB header and pre-silencer (which I think is tinny sounding).
Definately better top end. You'll like it.
My system was used. I cleaning the gasket surfaces well and installed new gaskets, and have had no problem with fumes.

 

It's the guy driving behind you that has to deal with some awfull "fumes".

 

I see in the Racing Beat catalog that the Street Port system has no provision for an O2 sensor...so how does that work? I assume also that is has a provision for the back pressure tube that activates the 6port actuators, right?

i put a racing beat header/muffler on my '85 GSL-SE a few years ago, along with 2 custom made pre-silencers. it actually got quieter (although the stock muffler was way gone by that point) has a nice mellow tone and the rev's were a LOT smoother. i didn't notice any increase in noxious fumes i had to put a random tech. cat on later because they started testing for emissions here , it didn't effect the power at all. it's held up very well after driving a few winters w/salt etc...

i'm very happy with the RB exhaust!!

 

Actuators: Yes, if you tell them what car you have.

O2 sensor bung: No, mine did not come with it. If I'd have mentioned the car was street driven they would have included it already welded into place. As it happened, they mailed me the bung, and I had it welded into place.

The other option is to just forget the O2 sensor. I have been running without one for about a year now, and there is no noticeable difference in operation.

 

Fumes are the price you pay for performance. I have yet to see a modded car that really impressed me that didn't stink when it was running.

Solution? Stay moving so you don't smell it.

Solution if someone else's stink bothers you? Mod your car, and stay ahead of them on the road.

 

I was under the impression that the O2 sesnsor is necessary to insure that the ECU maintains the proper air/fuel ratio...hence why running rich can be indicitive of a bad O2 sensor.

Maybe I will make a call to Racing Beat.

My car runs full rich all the time. No problems. No O2 sensor.

 

primaflow muffler is already restricted compare to other mufflers and adding a presilencer will restrict it more. Running it w/o presilencers will make it run better. I ran that set up since 1989 but had to replace it with a magnaflow a few months ago since I didn’t want to spend $200 for a new one due to xmas. For many it was loud, but I liked it since it retained the original rotary sound. Now with a magnaflow, had to use 2 short presilencers since its too loud. Its ok for now but still planning to get a primaflow.
