How hard is it really to put in aftermarket seats

Do you have to start from scratch making a bracket, or can you drill a few holes here and there( is it possible not to drill into the floor?) What have you guys experienced with it.... God bless

I mounted a couple Sparco Sprints in my first gen. The passenger side wasn't too hard. The drivers side though, was a pain.

I had to fit a piece of rhs on the tunnel side at the back because there isn't anything to mount to there. I also had to bolt through the piece that runs along the front that the drivers door side mount goes into for the tunnel side front mount. (I hope that makes sense).

I used the stock rails, and adpated the seats to those using 5mm thick by 30mm wide steel strap. It worked very well in the end. I still fit in the car with a helmet on, and am about 6ft tall.

I've since sold the car, so I can't photos of the mounts.

It's not that hard, and just takes a little creative thought. Probably depends on the seats too, as to fitting due to sizes etc.

I bought and mounted a pair of those cheap seats off ebay. The drivers side was easy to make the stock brackets fit, the pass side was a pain. I had to buy uber long bolts and make spacers so it would sit level. Truth is, the seats are too damn big for our cars. And they are way uncomfortable on long drives (over 90 min). My goal was to lower the seats but they ended up at stock height.

I'm putting in JDM as we speak, and let me say "my welder is my best friend. I'm doing alot of mods to make the stock bracets fit. I'm also fitting a power amp under the passenger seat, so thats causing a little bit extra work. all in all its not to bad. I just dont know how I would have been able to do it without my little mig welder.

I can vouch for that. It was a painless install. No fabbing required at all.

S2 13bT should have mentioned that being an Aussie his car is right hand drive,.... hence why his drivers side seat was a pain in the *** to fit....

I used the same method as he did, the seat sits much lower, but it depends on the model of seat being used. I have a Velo Milano (australian brand) and the centre of the seat is lower than where the rails bolt onto it. By working off the floor or the front rail where the tunnel side would normally bolt onto you get around that crappy problem of the tunnel side rail sits on about a 30degree angle and way forwards. Short of actually bolting it to the floor it will not go much lower, and not with rails that still function.

There is a "hump" in the passenger side that screws everything up, even if you have the right seat adapters. I took a grinder to it, and cut out a little section, so the seat rail would go over it.

My Recaros fit perfect now. Although I will agree that they are a little higher than I thought.

I have sat in 1st gens with Miata seats and FD seats, and they fit pretty damn nice and low though. Just some food for thought.

TurboII seats are just about perfect. Cheap, fit perfecly and sit lower, all the while retaining slide and adjustability. You can recover them any shade you please and they are Mazda parts.

Just my $.02

So Recaro does have direct bolt-on brackets? I looked at their site and it has no RX-7s on its list of brackets. Also Sparco has it on one list but when you open up the PDF list of brackets it is not there. Can anybody help me out this?

If you can't find the Recaro breckets do a google search for FlowFit seats. The bracket for them is interchangable with the Recaro one and it's cheaper in price, but equal quality. I bought a pair of FlowFits, full leather with brackets, inflatable 3 chamber lumbar support in both seats and headrests for less that the cost of one Recaro with cloth covers..

I don't regret using S5 TII seats at all, they're really comfortable and supportive. I'm 6'1" so I'm sensitive to the seat height. I sit at about the same height as with the stock seats (base model, which are lower than the GS/GSL seats). I also like the low-keyed looks and they're hardly any heavier than the stockers.

I just wish they had more adjustability for lumbar support and kidney supports. That's where a set of Ricaros would be beneficial.
