How does a modded FB really compare to todays stock cars?

Having said all of that, that is why I put a chevy lump in my 7. But even though the car is faster (or at least feels so) than anything I've driven (sadly a stock C5 is that fastest car I've driven) and I can lay down <5.5 0-60 times without much effort on a dusty road on Kumho's it does take away from the fun of ringing out every little bit of the engine. So I've sold my Chevy set up, not the FB, and I'm going with another engine. What will it be, I'm not even 100% on what, but it wont be an american V8.
It's not always about what you can beat, but more so how you feel when you drive the car. If you feel like a hero with ~150hp, stick with with it. I love FB's (a morbid love) but I can't justify the money to build a 12a or 13b N/A, it's just not me. Drive what you want because you love to drive it, not because it will beat something. I love my Suby, the second one I've had so far... I didn't buy it because of what it could beat, I just like the Legacy for a good all around ride. I like SA/FB's because they're simple and fun and inexpensive as far as a car hobby goes.

*Edit* Just read the 12A part. You're probably right about that.

The last Road and Track test with a 5-speed (I don't roll with anything other than a stick) clocked a 13.7 1/4. Now I honestly wouldn't want to do that with my Legacy, but that's why I have my 7's.
*edit* it's funny that most people that drive leagacies are usually 35+ it's kinda depressing sometimes, but too I think that's why I haven't gotten pulled over too. I guess cops see a family sedan and say "what a resposiable driver" even though I was just doing 90+ before I saw them.

My mom drives the **** out of her GT, even though it is only a slushbox. I'm surprised with the fact that she hasn't gotten pulled over, too. I can fully see a 13.7 possible with a sticked GT.
When my dad had his COBB STAGE 1 WRXs, they clocked at 13.7 with a 4.7 sprint to 60. His new STi, though, is capable of 12s. Whether he can drive into the twelves is yet to be seen. I'm confident he can hit a 13 flat, though. He likes turning more than straight lines; like any real driver does.
It's amazing to think that my mom's family car would be capable of running with my dad's old WRXs if she had a stick...

very well put, i love these cars to death but im not going to go around braggin' how they can take out a brand new car, sure they can with a full restoration and tons of cash into the engine. even cornering a newer car is going to beat these. you dont exactly see people in '76 comets trying to compete with with a '06 vettes.
however in comparison to most cars, these have aged well and hold up damn well, i mean how many cars do you see still SCCA racing these days that were produced 20 years ago?
as for just slapping on a few parts and hoping to beat everything on the road, you're going to get a big slap in the face and lose many times. most modern SUV's have lower 1/4 mile times than these, even modded. they are not fast cars, keep them to where they are meant to be run and thats the love of the car and the twistie corners.
also dont forget the major drivablity/realibity issues you run into when swapping on a huge carb and messing with these cars. sure its fun, but will it do everything in the same way a brand spankin' new sports car will?

ive always wanted to run a wrx.
ive got a gsl-se 13b Street port, full rb exhaust / header, no cats removed all things un-needed from rear hatch / engine bay and a holley 600 carb prepped by rb, exedy street strip clutch, and a 12lb flywheel.
how do you guys think i would fair against a wrx with intake and exhuast?

I don't see why everyone worrys about beating other people. There is always gonna be someone who has a faster car. There is also always gonna be someone who has a better car. My point is enjoy you RX-7 and don't worry about beating WRX's and 350Z's. Cause one day you will roll up on one and it will as modded as yours and it will spank you ***. If you do get to beating WRX's then just remember Suburu does make a better model that will be a lot tougher to beat. Just my 2 cents.

i agree with Mazda12AGS theres always someone with a fatter wallet than you lol
ounce i get my licence and get on the street racing scen then ill worry bout beating those faster cars manily worry bout gettin my car up to standed and driveablity

Compare $5000 in modifications to my current RX-7 verses $5000 for a down payment on at $36,000 350Z. At 6.7% interest for 3 years, I'd be coughing up $1045 a month. Not counting full coverage insurance.
And like we race to the ATM from a dead stop, there are turns and twists, and straights, and we are both on street tires, and ............the 350Z driver should get there first. But the RX-7 driver (me) will be happier.

As someone said here, there will always be some guy with a bigger wallet and you will get beat. I think the only really relevant comparison is which car gives you the best all around performance for the dollar invested. I am sure a lot of the people on this forum could not afford to invest $10,000 in an FB like I did, but even at that rate, I don't know what I could BUY for that price that would be as fast or as nice as my car. I got lucky and found a pristine 1984 GSL with 63,000 miles and a dead motor - what are the chances?
I have not come up against any ricer who could outrun me in a straight line, but I found a couple that could get a way from me in the twisties. Yes, I know how to drive - won a lot of trophies driving in competition, so that is not the issue.
If you really want your FB to outrun all those modern cars, the easiest, cheapest and definitely the most reliable way is the V8. To get that kind of performance with the rotary, you will destroy the driveability with a NA or the life expectancy with a turbo - take your choice.

I asked Mazdatrix, "suppose I went insane and dumped $30K in a balanced upgrade of my rx-7, would I have something better than a 350Z in all aspects"
Mazdatrix said , "no, drivability and dependability would favor the 350z. People keep RX-7's going because they like them"
I test drove the RX-8. It was faster and handled better, but not $30,000 worth. Next I tried the maita. It accelerated about the same as the RX-7. The miata's steering wheel hit my thighs. And I weigh only 175 pounds

give it to somone who wont streetrace and risk peoples lives for a sheer momentary thrill.
then again, if you happen to be around texas, the good news is that i may most likely be able to pull parts i need from your car when you wreck it into some suv full of children on their way to soccer practice ; )
Its a difficult question to answer, can you drive, do you practise, what road conditions etc, but the only real way to know is to race, go to a 1/4 mile and run head to head, then let us know. You do have a chance...
ive pulled a few of my friends cars.
one of which has pulled a 13.9 at a local 1/4 mile strip.
but we all know track and street are 2 verry different things.
he had a 98 z28, ls1, full intake, exhaust and re-flashed ecu.
and a swapped b18 civic hatch, completely stripped with basic boltons, he's got a timeslip of 14.2
ive never actually taken my car to the track sadly, but im really wanting to see how i would hold with a wrx, the wrx guys around here wont race me because "my car is a crappy old slow peice that wont stand a chance against a wrx".
or so ive been told by all the near stock wrx owners

There are tons of cars you could own that would be a lot fast as **** for 10000. Take my buddys MR2, he has way less then 10 grand in that car and there is very little **** around here he has rolled up on thats been fasterand it handles way better then alot of **** cause its like driving a go cart. People only drive these cars because they have a passion for them. You really have to have a passion for these cars to understand them. You have to a passion for them to fight with it till it warms up and drive to work at 5 freezing your *** off cause your heat sucks, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Not to be a dick or disrespectful, but who cares? even if you do race them and beat them then they will find some other flaw with your car and make fun of that. Its a never ending battle that no one will win.

thats when you learn to tell them to shut up, and tell them that a family car has no use at a race track with its 4-doors and wagon versions.
that seems to stop most wrx owners in their tracks.
around here, they have a hard time admitting that a wrx isnt a sports car.
just like the srt-4 owners.
What would todays cars be like against a rx7 thats got 4 wheel drive? I seen one in a rally race in some mag. I wonder what it would take to attemp something like this? Then match the AWD with a stock 13BTT and I think you would get something thats unbeatable.. and still cost less than those "newr" cars.
I love my rx7 and would not want some other car to toy around town with. My DD is a 1990 toyota camry, station wagon.

Theoretically it could be very easy to convert to AWD if done correctly, but often you need to raise the engine for the new axle clearance.
The only advantage with AWD would be launching. Even without AWD we have a great weight advantage when launching. So who cares? "Drive the car, don't let the car drive you."
That doesn't mean wouldn't rock an AWD 7, though.

Most ricers that point out every other flaw in your car after you beat them, just smile and say but mines faster. My slow beat up old rusty piece of ugly looking trash JUST KICK YOUR A$$! and it doesnt matter what else they say. because if they do just sit back and smile. because at the end of the day, you paid for your car, you actually own your car. And odds are you have done every mod to your car. So there we have it, ignore them. have fun blow them away end of story...

ive pulled a proven high 13 z28.
from both a stop and a roll.
as soon as my new baseplate comes in from proform and i get those center pivot floats installed i will have to go find out i guess.
