Question How do you get the shifter housing off??

Yesterday I was test fitting my S5 tranny, and mount. Although I just thought I'd stomach the fact that the shifter would be about 1" further back, when I acutally go it in there I relized how much a hack it would be to modify the tranny tunnel. I've decided to go ahead and do the modifcation that setzup did, and archived (although all the pictures are red X's now, so I really don't have anything to go by).

Is there some way to get the housing and the shifter rod off the tranny without taking the entire rear extension housing off?

How do you get the control lever box off of the rod inside the box? There is some sort of holding pin, but I don't see how it comes out.

Oh, and setzup, if you read this, I'd like to see those pictures that you took of the shifter modification.... pm me, if you still have them.

Its either because its late and I can't read, or I'm just plain confused, but I'm not sure what you're talking about. Are you talking about how the shifter actually connects to the tranny? Thats what I thought originally, but then as I read it again it almost sounds like you're talking about the boot or the piece of the dash. Again, its late, and I have reading comprehension troubles, but if you're trying to get the shifter off the tranny its just a few bolts. If you're trying to get the boot off, again, just a few bolts. If you're trying to get the dash piece that surrounds it off, good luck. Even if one of the above work, you should pick up a Haynes Shop manual. Plenty of good tidbits to help you when dis- or re-assembling your first gen.

I'm talking about the actual shifter extention housing. The shifter is cake to get out.

I have the two transmissions sitting in my garage (85 12A and S5 13BT), and as those that have done the swap know that the shifter would otherwise be about an 1" further back, unless you take the housing from the 12A tranny, and modify it to fit on the TII tranny. The actual control rod also needs to be shorted.

I just don't see how all this stuff is suppose to come off, without taking apart the rear half of the transmission.T he shifter housing itself is attached to the tail housing by 4 bolts, but its the the internal control rod and lever that is giving me greif. First off, the control lever (the part attached to the control rod, that the shifter moves) is key'd, but I don't see how the key is removed. It appears that the control rod won't be able to come out without the tail-extension housing removed. Is there some way to do it without cracking the tranny open?

I have the 85 FSM around somewhere, but cant seem to find it right now.... I may have let a friend borrow it. I have a Hayes manual for the 2nd gen (cause the engine and tranny are from a 2nd gen), but it is a complete joke when it actually comes down to taking the parts of the transmission off. Basically they comment on how the tranny is almost beyond the scope of the DIYer, then show a couple of blown-apart diagrams of an NA tranny. No help there!!

The extension housing needs to come off to modify the rod anyway. Pop the cover on the side of the shifter housing. You will see the block that the ball of the shifter sits in. There is a roll pin or a 10mm bolt that holds that block to the shift rod. That needs to be removed. Now you can loosen the bolts that hold on the trans extension housing and slide the whole assembly off the back.

Bingo!! How do you get the roll pin out. What tool should I use.

I was afraid of that.... oh well, I'll just bite the bullet.

Don't sweat taking the extension housing off. It's really not a big deal. As for the roll pin use a punch and hammer. Tap it through the rod and out the other side.

Hey Fat boy,
You have to take the rear half of the trans off to get the rod out if I remember right. Take the N/A trans apart first and you will see how it needs to be done for the T2 one.
Like sorteddub said, use a punch and a hammer to get the roll pin out. I you have to put the trans in a gear to do this but can't remember for sure what gear. You'll see when you dick with it. If I remember right the n/a trans uses a bolt while the T2 one uses the roll pin.
Are there any specific pic's you'd like to see? I'd have to look on a few old disks to find them.
Let us know how it goes.

Update: After dicking around with it for several hours, I gave up and cut the transmission tunnel..... It will probably be pretty close to hitting the fake brushed aluminum shifter surround, but I plan on replacing that with the real deal sometime anyway. I was planning on doing this in the first place, but got scared when I test fit the tranny. But after standing the two trannys right next to each other, and measureing the differences, and setting my tranny mount up, I relized that it would equate to only about an inch (1 3/16" actually).

I really wanted this beast together, and had set a date by which the tranny would be in. That was tuesday, and I met my goal..... thank goodness. Oh, and BTW as of today, I got my entire drivetrain in now.... engine, tranny, driveshaft, etc. The S5 13BT engine dropped in like it was meant to be there (RB mount was perfect). I'm very pleased at this point.... should be ready to drive by mid July.

lol..... mine was supposed to be in last fall..... Hopefully there won't be any more major delays.

I have everything I need to finish the car except a TII starter, fluids and some hoses. Its just a matter of getting everything in. The stuff that requires fabrication is the only thing that could really slow me down at this point, and hopefully, I've done enough planning that it won't take more time than I expect. Having the major mechanical components of the swap in place is quite refreshing. The next big step is mounting the fuel cell, fuel pump, and running the new fuel lines. Then the haltech and battery. The list goes on, and on.....

Oh well, I'll cross my fingers and work like the dickens, and pray that I can get it running in 4 weeks time.

Whats a good project without some irony anyway Oil lines won't take long, when you get the stuff. Are you going with AN lines?

Lucky for me, I'm single and have a job where I make my own hours. It makes for plenty of time for working on the car, that is if I don't waste it all browsing the forums

Anyway, I'm headed on a short vactation, so unfortuately the car will sit for almost a week.... oh well, I need to get away from it for a while. Its slowly draining my will to live (and my wallet). Definatly a love-hate relationship, lol.

I still got some more work to do, and im not happy to do it anymore, not to mention I work a shitload now, and on the weekends when Im off, I have my kid I cant even mow the freaking grass!
