Take the door panel off and then remove the plastic backing.

Look along the door handle and stuf, the plastic part. You should see small squareish plugs. Pop them out and remove the philips screws down in the exposed wells. Take the inner door handle trim off and then the door panels are held into the door with metal clips along the perimeter of the panel. May take some gentle tugging but they will pop out. After you're that far, carefully peel the plastic liner off and you're all set...

Some cars have metal clips, but some cars have plastic ones - if you've got the plastic ones, be careful because they're easy to break.

the metal ones tend to come out of the holes too, well at least on the race car they did.

The metal clips like to tear out the holes in the back of the door panel if you don't pry on the clip itself, and not the door panel. You also have to lift up on the door panel once it's loose to free the part that goes down inside the window slot. That's probably obvious, but thought it was worth mentioning anyway.

My door panel popped right off when I pulled on it... it was held on by bolts under the rubber part of the trim, the window crank, and some metal clip type things on the backside of the panel. The metal clips just popped out of their respective holes quite easily. I pulled and pried a bit with a screwdriver, and that was that.

Were pre-85 door panels equipped with clips from hell or something? =P

I'm thinking of pulling off my panels again and taking pictures this time, to save people who gotta figure it out like I had to... I was afraid I'd break something!

also there is plastic stuck on the inner metal door you should just rip that off however you want but make sure the sticky tar stays on... then go buy the thickest plastic drop cloth you can find and stick it back on there after cutting it to size. i don't exactly know what this plastic is for but i made sure it was back the way i found it just in case it was important

I think its sound/weather insulation. Mostly weather and moisture I assume. The door isint air tight from the outside (look up under the handle sometime), so I assume its to keep the outside out, and the inside in.
