How can I tell what tranny I have?
Alright I own a '84 SE and would like to know if there's a way to tell if I have the SE transmission or the GSL model. Thing is it looks like there is a junkyard tranny in it and all it says is 85 RX7. There are taller gears in the SE model, I just want what SHOULD be in there. Is there any way to figure this out?

The SE tranny will have a ribbed-case on the center section (gear section) of the tranny and the bell housing will have a particle 'vent' on the driver's side. This vent is clearly designed to exit any particles from the clutch surface and pressure plate should they ever fail.
To the best of my knowledge, the SE tranny bell housing with vents are specific to the model, but if I'm wrong someone will be along shortly to tell me so!
You are correct that the gear ratios for SE's are different - notably a taller 5th gear for lower rpm cruise above 55-65 mph. HTH,

The hard part is you never know what has been done to a car.
I sold a guy a set of axles off an SE, The dust sheilds looked different but I thought it was just cause it was an SE, Nope they had been cut at some time.

That is an SE tranny - the vent that you pointed out on the left side of the photo is the fragment trap and port. There are small fins in this area to help channel particles out of the transmission casing and ejecting them in a safe direction under your car.
If your tranny looks considerably different, it may not be an SE tranny afterall. Look closely at your gear shift lever where it enters the top box on the tranny as well - if it's been 'rigged' to work, it won't look original. HTH,
