GSL will have rear disk brakes and limited slip. Also, most of the GSL's came with a sunroof. Another really obvious one is the badging on the rear of the car, one says "GS" and one says "GSL"

my car has every option you can name but rear drums and i cant tell if it has an lsd or not. and i've been told my my tech that mazda did put some lsd's in some GS's if they had some extra ones layin around... and there is no badge on it so what model do i have?? the reason i don't know if i have an lsd is that i'd say only like 45% of the time one tire spins about 55% its both?!?!?!?!

Nah, open diffs can spin both wheels under the right conditions. You could get a GS with all the options, other than LSD and rear disks, so thats probably what you have.

Yea, all FB's follow the same sort of trim level structure. 79/80 are different. If your car has rear drums then its either a S (relatively rare) or a GS (most common). If it has power mirrors and a center console then its a GS. S's like mine, have nothing. No map lights, manual mirrors, no power trunk release, no trunk light. Real bare bones. Chances are you have a GS, thats what most people have.

When I owned an 85 S, there was no leters on the rear (unlike the GS, GSL, and GSL-SE). Mine had one option -- alloy wheels. No P/S, cass, A/C... just light bare-boned fun!

P.S. I purchased that 85 new in October 1984... 18 years ago and drove it for 2 years and 42,000 happy miles until an off-duty cop smashed me.. and the ******* got me stuck with the fault on the accident.

Jack the rearend up and spin one of the rear wheels. That's the easiest way to tell if you've got lsd.

I have a GS with zero badging - No mazda, no nothing. It also has rear discs and lsd.
