usually, if it is bad it will leak. Check where the rod runs into the back of the M.C. If that looks good, just bleed the hell out of it. Check the M.C. linkage as well

Does your clutch pedal come back up after you mash it to the floor. If not the slave cylinder is most likely the prob.

You just might have the learned the old saying "When you replace the clutch ALWAYS replace the slave cylinder (they are cheap).

Always a good idea to replace the master, slave, and hydraulic hose as a unit, otherwise you end up in the situation you currently find yourself.

Don't waste time on rebuild kits, the cylinders leak because they get out of tolerances. Do you self a favor and buy new parts. Those rebuild kits don't majically refill lost metal on the cylinder walls, and if it does seem to work, it will only work for a while and start leaking again....

your slave cylinder can be gone even if the pedal does come back up. if the slave cylinder is dead then the pedal will feel like there is no fluid (or full of air) when the master is full.

definatly a good idea to replace both of them at the same time, if one went bad.

Look under the dash to the back of the clutch master cylinder. If there's fluid drooling out of the back, it's shot. Most likely that's the problem. A bad slave will leak fluid and causet he fluid level to drop, while a bad master will leak and suck air at the same time so the fluid level doesn't change much.

Guess what,,? after replacing the clutch,i bought a
new slave cycl.still the pedel was mush..it was the
master cycl.,,it wasn't that old to think it failed, but
it did. sure as **** !!and i did rebuild the master
cycl. the parts i used were better, and now,,all sorts
of clutch,,no mush,,,remember this,,,if the fluid changes
colour,,"dark" or "dirty" the master is going out.the
colour is caused by the metel from the master cycl.

When mine went bad on my 85, I just bought the whole set, MC, SC, and Hydraulic line A little more costly, but I know the status of each part

if you have any questions about wich cylinder is bad, before you go out and buy one... test ...

the slave cylinder is really easy to test if it is bad.. while you are watching it, have someone push the clutch pedal.. if the rod in the slave cylinder moves (should move about 1/4 inch) then it is good.
