Horn honks when red-line!
Horn honks when red-line!
My 1984 12A(stock) honks the horn everytime the car redlines... Now this is gettting annoying since I drive hard on it.
Is there any way to keep this from happening w/o loosing my horn all together?
And when I get my msd box, will it automaticly stop, or is the procedure still needed?
Thanks

Nearly every rotary car made has an over-rev buzzer in the dash to remind you to shift. Its due to the rotaries affinity for high rpms and the relatively tame sound of the engine, even when running at or near redline.Exceeding 8K rpms can do some serious damage to a stock engine and Mazda felt the need to remind people that rotaries do in-fact have a maximum rpm.
Its not the horn, although it might be mistaken for it amongst all the noise and action. Its a little buzzer inside the tachometer and it can be disabled, although its not the best idea.

steve or wacky can you not also adjust where the REV buzzer kicks in. I thot i read something about that in the FAQ's. I know my buzzer kicks in 500 rpm before redline so i just tolerate it for like a second before i shift if im driving super hard

Right well, I've rebuilt the engine and I have a whole racing beat exhaust and intake setup coming so I should be up to par. inside the engine. Revving over 8000rpm shouldnt be a problem. I just want to disconnect it...

the buzzer that he is hearing is most certainly the redline buzzer. the horn and the redline buzzer each have a distinct tone which should be as plain as day to figure out which is being activated.
If all you did was a factory internal rebuild, your still not good for safe 8000+ pulls.
Apex chatter,e-shaft whip amd other internal physical problems are the reason for the factory redline being where it is.It doenst matter if the engine is tired or fresh,if its stock inside then observe a 7000-7500 rpm redline.

I had an 1984 GS, did the same thing but it's not your horn. It's just the redline buzzer, but I agree at it somewhat does sound like a horn noise going off. Just remember only you are hearing it, not the others outside your car. So like Jeezus said, it's probably time to shift
i rather like the redline buzzer whereas some people hate it. there arent many cars out there that have a factory redline buzzer and that is one more thing that makes our cars unique!
Don't like the answer, don't ask rotary pre-school questions.

My thoughts exactly.
You dont have to listen to any of us,despite the huge gap in rotary experience that is plain enough to see.Rotaries can be as fickle as they are reliable,so good luck learning the hard, expensive way........
