Hoping to join the Turbo FB club soon

It's been Almost a year since i started collecting parts for the turbo project, with the economy going in the toilet and my money tree dying the 7's been down way too long and i just can't seem to get much done. I'm a newb welder and the fab work for the header and intake can be very frustrating. I did make a little progress this week and here's some pics. There's still a mountain of things to do Just a little advise to begining gas welders, be prepared for one hell of a hard time with aluminum

What have I got myself into??????

Question for you Turbo fb guys

Can I use my old fuel supply hard line for a return? I'm running an independent -6an line from the bosch pump to the fpr. Is there any problems with getting rid of the check and cut valves, do I still need them since I don't have any smog equip?

What gas are you using and are you referring to TIG? If so, make sure your aluminum is damn near spotless, TIG does not forgive contaminants well... Keep in mind that with aluminum, unlike steel it has a sort of, "I'm solid, I'm liquid" thing going on. Unlike steel where it becomes softer as it nears its melting point and then liquefies... aluminum tends to just change within a shorter frame of temp/time, so you want to keep that in mind as your welding.

Try doing stainless steel with a nice golden color afterwards, its a bitch for me to do the very small 1/16" plates.

Thanks for the help guys, hey Billy I'm hoping to make it to Zoomfest this year, lots of fun last year. I'm bummed I missed DGRR, but it seems the car is always down when it's time for the gap. I watch these youtube vids of rx7 caravans and I can't wait to be in one, especially with a little boost. I'm only shooting for 180-200 hp@8psi. I know the motor won't last very long if I go higher and I'm not in the mood to pull it apart and add internal mods. So when that motor goes I'll swap in a t2 or rew.

I wish I could afford a tig welder, I just have a medium duty oxy-acetylene setup, maybe someday tig/argon but not anytime soon.

Ohhh I know who you are! you are the guy who was in front of me during the parade laps at Zoom Fest! I am the kid who followed you around scaring your wife(you said she was worried you were losing grip?) screeching my 185s haha. I am glad to hear you're coming to the next zoomfest too! We can talk about our turbo plans together haha.

Demon I don't deserve any respect for welding aluminum, I failed miserably, it's the heat control i'm strugling with. I end up destroying my pieces, I'm sticking with steel for now.

87 turbo II I remember you putting the hurt on those stock tires, running Road Atlanta was great fun, I'm glad I had my oil temp guage on that day, it was damn hot and my temps were starting to climb and off the track I went. I really hope my car is done for this years event. I think I need to work on cleaning up the engine bay, I see these other amazing 7's spotless bays and feel like a hack.

Robert I'm working on another intake Idea, but I just might need one of yours . I posted a couple of pics of the exhaust(not the greatest). Mounted the intercooler today(89 Starion) I here these are ok and I won't have to relocate the battery.

Jay, we wondered where you were at DGRR. You better be bringing this thing, NA or boosted, to Zoom-Fest. Go ahead and boost that 12a, if it blows, just get another one and build it up a little. A friend of mine, who lives in Toccoa, may have a true 12aT engine for sale in the near future. Its just the engine though, but itd be perfect for you to get and build up while youre running that 12a.

I wish I had money to make the SA faster Damn college, oh well.

Thanks for the good word Chino84gsl, good luck with your project as well

Hey Donnie it's been a while, definitely let me know if your friend from Toccoa want's to get rid of his 12at. I have a spare 12a and trans, but a true 12at is a great place to start. I've never been in a boosted 7, so I think when mine is finally done, it will be great because I won't be thinking it's not as fast as John Doe's

Hope see many rotor heads @ Zoom-Fest, and thanks to fellow enthusiasts that keep our passion alive!!!!

Turbo Plenum done

Here's my home brew turbo plenum, It's rough but it's all I can do on the super econo budget I'm forced to deal with. I just don't have the funds for proffesional products anymore. Installed my fuel pressure guage in the old clock spot and it was a little snug, then all the sudden I hear CRAAAAAAAAACK!!!.......OOOOpppppps....... ...Glad it's not a show car, but it's paid for...lol

update

Just rebuilt the turbo, supply and return line plummed, and 3" ID downpipe about 80% done. Finally got a wideband, now I need to figure out where I'm going to mount the o2 bung. Progress is slow but I'm inching my way toward boost. With the car being down for over a year now, I'm having fb withdrawals. With so much still to do to the car, sometimes I ask myself why I would even try to boost my car Then I just go to youtube and type in turbo fb and then I know why.

+1

Keep working at it and it'll be complete in due time. It's better to take your time and do it right than to rush it.

Good work so far. Just a bit of constructive critisism. That plenum is not going to work. You need to make it a box and it has to include the "vent hole" on the front of the carb. If you leave that port open, the first time it boost up, gas will pour out of that hole. Other than that, you seem to be on track. Good luck.

Thanks guy's, I know it's not the prettiest work, but I'm not going for a show car that I have to polish all the time, just as long as it's functional and FAST!!!

Bad83 thanks for chimming in here, I plan on having some kind of -8an barb or fitting welded into the air intake hole and running it over to the plenum, will that work to equalize the pressure?

Is that Schedule 40 you used on the downpipe? If it is, good choice. It's cheap and durable. A little heavy, but you can't beat it for longevity.
