holley carb questions

Hey, I'm having a funny problem getting my holley carb going - it's a used holley and racing beat intake kit. i didn't get any instructions or mounting hardware with the kit.

The car starts and then immediately races off towards redline. Even with the throttle cable totally removed from the carb. I've got a good pump and fpr. the gauge says about 6-7psi fuel pressure.

The interesting thing is, i actually mounted the carb. 180 degrees rotated the first time. That put the throttle cable attachment on the other side and caused other misc. problems. BUT, it started and idled perfectly smoooooth. It ran up to about 3k rpm under load and then just hit a brick wall. It just wouldn't go over 3k rpms unless it was out of gear. With the carb attached correctly, as shown in RB's photos and other photos i've seen around, the engine just shoots up to redline (before i shut it down..)

Any ideas at all anyone? Please help.

I don't know much about carbs, but I'm ordering a rebuild kit and am more than willing to learn. I want my rx back on the road.

later

First make sure the throttle blades are closing all the way. This means primary AND secondary.

Barring that, it sounds like you have a massive vacuum leak.

I had a hell of a time working out the linkage on mine. The throttle return spring wasnt too good and the linkage was sticking a bit so mine was running up like that. This same thing will make those throttle blades stick open so like pj said, check those.

alright, I'm going down to check it out now. Thanks for the throttle return spring tip. I've got a decent amount of pre-load on mine. it may still be sticking tho - so that means i get to remove the carb again and check! like i should have done to start with...ah well.

thanks all, later
