Hmmm, new here.

Hello all! I've been lurking for some time and I think I'm ready for my first post. I don't own anything Rotary quite yet but I think it's on the horizon. There is one for sale near me, an '84 GS, for pretty cheap ($800 Canadian). I went to check it out tonight and it was decent. I didn't to hear it run though. The interior was great, the exterior had some rust and quite a few chips(there was a light coat over the entire underbody, I might just get it steam cleaned and then paint it). The engine was very clean, but this thing has like 260,000 KM; so like 160,000 Miles so I'm a bit worried about it's mechanical condition. On the other hand it does appearently run well enough. The owner said that it dies when you come to a stop unless you pull the choke and that was about the only problem. The exhaust will need doing so I might just run a straight pipe because there isn't much of a noise law around here. Anyway, if anyone knows of what could cause the dying when coming to a stop probelm it would really help me towards buying it.

Thanks,
Grant

P.S. I pushed down over the front and rear ends and man does this thing feel tight compared to my current car ('82 200SX), like it's really performance oriented!

well, let me be the first to say WELCOME. i hope you get it and it runs well. mainly look for oil leaks when purchasing. there are many things you can do too. search the forum and find out what mods you want to do. you can usually find anything you want on here. good luck.

It's carb or fuel related. If the car has no rust and doesn't smoke at start-up, then grab that beast. Next, read the archives and pull the carb. Send it to sterling/carl for a basic rebuild and you'll have a snappy rexxy that'll run like hell...

You can run a straight exhaust pipe if you want but you'll go deaf in no time. Rotaries are way WAY louder than you're typical boinger.

Hmm, I think I'm gonna try and get this thing as a project; or just wait for a while and get a different one. I wasn't so sold on these cars until I sat in one, it was very sporty. Anyone know how easy it is to de-rust and then paint the bottom of a car?
Thanks,
Grant

I've always been fortunate enough to buy rx-7's w/o rust problems.

That is the easiest way to avoid having to spend the time/money on fixing stuff like that.

Sounds like it might be a good deal though!!

If you want to go for the super supreme deluxe rx-7, you should search around for an 84-85 gsl-se!!!

They have a bigger, faster engine, different gearing, and an upgraded suspension. They also have a common bolt pattern which fits most fwd rims!! You can do anythying to them!!!

Good luck with your purchase!!

I second the GSL-SE idea. They are generally in better condition and have: bigger brakes, better suspension, 13b, EFI(don't know if thats a good thing), better bolt pattern, slightly better drivetrain and usually alot less rust. Because they are the last years of the FB series and the better model they are usually in better condition.

The number 1 thing with any Rx7 is rust and engine compression.

Good luck

rust is verrry hard to get rid of if theres too much of it. i bought an rx7 that had rust underneath and in the wheel wells...and it was a gsl-se!
what i did was swap it out for another gsl-se with ZERO rust...i say pass on this one and search for one with either less or no rust...in your area i'd say search for one that has been garage kept...check out my page and you'll see the rust issues i had. the car litterally was falling apart from the rust...

For $800 canuck bucks, chances are the car will have some rust and will smoke a little on start up (most do with that kind of milage and it doesn't mean your engines toast). If this is the price point you are aiming for, this car might be a good deal. You will not find a rust free GSL-SE for any where near this price. If cash is an issue, you might consider buying it while working your way towards the SE. $800! - thats nothing for a car that runs!

Yeah I really want something of a project car, that will eventually become a daily driver/Auto-Xer. Oddly enough I actually prefer the GS because it has less luxury items to take out and because I sort of like carbs, although the EFI on my current car sure is convenient. And yes I am broke but it's all good. I definately don't think it is as rust as those pics of that black one, and the interior is in really good shape. Also I think I can talk him down a bit, and he is going to through in a Haynes manual and a reconditioned radiator. I'm probably gonna work on this thing over the winter and then start driving it in the spring and sell my 200SX. If worst comes to worse I can drive my bike in the summer and keep working on it. From what I've heard it runs alright but it did smoke a bit the last time it was started. First thing I'm gonna do it the ATF treatment and clean the carb really well.

P.S. My Fiance is super short (5'), anyone think she'd be able to drive this thing?
