High rpm hesitation/stutter

Hey Guys,

I apologize because this has probably already been covered but im on my phone in the states and searching isnt the best on the app.

The issue:
High rpm/load hesitation or stuttering type action.
Occurs at 6000ish rpm in 2nd, 5000ish rpm in 3rd and 4th on full pedal/full load.
Feels like the car is missing almost like fuel starvation issues we've had in the past. But ye, missing/hesitation/stuttering. Basically hots a wall of no power in the stuttering fashion.

The car/the troubleshooting
84 gsl streetport. Mechanical secondaries. Massssive fuel filter (the big oil filter style ones)
Dual fuel pumps (surge system)
Aftermarket muffler (autozone special with a silencer which is about 1.5" ID -noise issues previously for PiR)

We have checked that there is sufficient flow to the carb (good healthy flow).
Secondaries appear to be opening fully
All jets seem to be jetting good.
Fuel filter changed for good measure
Plugs look normal.

Trying to think of what the issues could be. We are currently racing in portland so we are driving up to 6500-7000rpm every shift and the lack of power is affecting us.

Thanks,

Jesse

I am no expert, but recently I had the same issue. After checking out all the fuel related issues and getting no where I started looking at the ignition system. I started with plugs, wires, coils all with no luck. I found the issue in the distributor. It was the magnetic pickup that was failing. The only reason I found it was when I was checking the vacuum advance I had the timing light hooked up and was revving the engine, the light let me know that the signal was being interrupted. I rebuilt an old distributor, installed it and not only did the high rpm misfire go away, but I picked up a ton of power that I did not realize was missing as well.

Sometimes a previous owner could have smashed a pickup wire or two under the aluminum cover or even under the cap. So mine wasn't a bad pickup but a bad set of pickup wires. Swapped to another dizzy lying around and it worked.

Thanks guys! Your comments pointed me in the right direction. For us it happened to be that our distributer keeper nut had backed off and our timing was adjusting itself and had backed off our original setting.
