Hi, New here

Just wanted to say Hello. First time RX7 owner.
Just had a 1981 Rx7 given to me by a friend. It has sat for the last 9 years, ran when he parked it. Interior perfect, little rust on the otside. Don't know much about rotary motors, so it is a new adventure for me....

Best place to start reading is the faq page at the top of this forum. You'll find more than enough info on getting it started again (refreshing the fuel system, rebuild the carb, etc). I seem to notice alot of Pa people here so you can probably even find local help. How many miles on your car? Oh and of course, Pics?

have you started it yet?
if not, read the faq.
if you have, go out and check to see that your Oil metering pump linkage isnt siezed up. you dont want to replace your engine yet, do you?

Thanks!!

Thanks for the welcome....I appreciate it...

I'll grab some photos this weekend. It has 70k original miles on it. I better check the FAQ'S before I try and start it up. It ran when he parked it, but I am sure everything needs gone over at this point.

I never messed with rotary, so kinda nervous about it.

Is there a particular place that shows about what all to check on a car that hasn't been started in a while?

The model is a GSL if that helps.

Sorry for the dumbness, I owned chevy's all my life, this is my first xr7, and I don't wanna cause damage to it.....

the best thing to do when you have a question is to search (im telling you now, so no one toasts your ***** later)

however, before spinning the motor:
dump the old fuel, replace the fuel filter.
remove the plugs
pour motor oil into the carb and let it soak into the motor, spin the motor BY HAND clockwise (referance from the front of the car) at least three or four times, then you can crank it until it builds oil pressure. while its cranking, each spark plug hole should make an aggressive "pssst" noise with a regular rhythm.. if it doesnt, theres a stuck or blown seal somewhere, and the "atf or MMO or seafoam treatment" will be required (search)

after all that, re-install the pluugies, add gas (87 is okay) and let her rip.

Sparky pretty much summed it up in a nutshell, just make sure that your neighbors are gone when you do this, as the extra oil he mentioneed will make it smoke really bad for about 20 minutes or so

Oh and welcome to the club !

Welcome, welcome. I'm sure you'll find what ur looking for, what ever that may be. There's plenty of local help in PA depending on ur location and if all else fails there's me!.

Plenty of NE 7's out there and tons of advice from all of the forums members. I'm sure you'll get her cranked in no time. Just get some snow tires if you plan on running her in the snow or garage her if you're not. FB's tend to hate the winter, at least mines does (she hasn't seen snow in 5 years)

Umm, "bodykits" is such a sensitive word. We prefer front airdams, and sideskirts. I'm glad another FB is saved from snow,

I believe they came stock with 100hp, which was pretty fast back then. Buut they can really add up with a few simple mods. I suggest doin the rats nest removal over the winter break. And maybe some intake/exaust mods for some cheap HP. After that then you're really getting into the rotary love.

Beware though, these cars can be addictive. I had my first fb as a gift from my father for over 5 years. It's still not completely finished and I buy another one as a project car, not to mention all of the parts cars we've gone through.

PA Has some pretty mean junkyards too. I'm sure you'll find all you need in a couple of runs there. Good luck with the 7. And we're always here, day and night. Just make sure you've searched first.
