Hi - a few questions

Hey guys, new member here, My name is Alex and i live in California, i have a silver 1985 RX-7 and i have a question for ya.

Do you think its worth it to put a new performance exhuast muffler on my car? i saw the monza exhaust for only 140 bucks, i was wondering if it was worth it.

What ind of other options can i invest in for a little more performance, or just to make it run better.

One last question!

I have this niose in my car when i drive its a thumping noise that speeds up as i accelerate and slows down to a stop when i come to a complete stop. Its really annoying, im wondering if its my shock obsorbers or somthing....(still learning about the car, bear with me here.)

No.

I've heard some BAD stuff about Monza. Go for Racing Beat or MindTrain.

Because you live in Cali, I suggest Mindtrain as their system is modular and integrates with a catalytic converter.

Exclamation Great "legal" option!

If you want a powerful and legal exhaust try get a hold of a November 1997 Sport Compact Car magazine. In that one they have a 1983 RX-7 S that they put Racing Beat headers and cat-back on, plus they use a RandomTechnology high flow cat. It ended up having one of the lowest emissions of all cars (even for modern ULEV ones!!) and it picked up 7% power at the wheels. But definately go with Racing Beat their products for the header and cat-backsuperior by far!!!

Keep in mind that aftermarket exhausts are MUCH louder thatn the stock one. When looking for the noise, try to pay attention to when it occurs. In all gears? Only when accelerating? Never when braking? By paying attention to conditions, you can eliminate things. From your description, it's gotta be something that turns... Driveshaft, diff, tires, etc.

Good luck,
Kerry

Hey, about your thumping noise.. need more info..
That kind of thing could be so many things, who knows what's loose, and causing that. I knew some guys that slid under a friends car and tied something around the drive shaft or somewhere, and the guy had to take it to a garage to figure out what was making all the noise under his car as he drove it.. it could be anything, depending what's loose, or broken or what. If it stops when you come to a stop, it probably has something to do with the wheels.. does the car vibrate at all? Anything hanging down? Your tires look good?

Ive heard you've gotta do a little bending/cutting/welding to get em in. I've heard they rust out really fast. I've heard the chrome rots off their headers quickly.

Mind you, this is all stuff I've HEARD... Might not be the fault of Monza, Might not be true at all. I dunno, but it's been floating around here and Mazspeed, so I'll take it as sound advice.

Question first things first......

ok...im checkin out the racing beat items, thanks to kerry and so i figure out what i am going to add on first, im thinkin getting it tuned up at the shop, make sure its running at normal, then im gonna install those underdrive pulleys. exaust system maybe in the future.
But has anyone got a new suspension package for thier rx-7?
if so let me know how it handles and what your opinions are. I dont want to go all out with this car, its going to be a daily driver.

Also, has anyone installed a new performance carburetor? i hear it really helps alot, especially if u have new headers etc.

anything u can reply to or answer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

"somethin' on my left front wheel keeps clickin"

Ahem, about those underdrive pulleys, be sure to mark them with your stock pulley's marks if you need to. Chances are, they are already marked.

Do you need some Leading/Trailing split suggestions?

Oh, and about that new carb idea, sometimes aftermarket carbs can diminish your drivabilty. You said you didn't want to go all out with this car. The stock Nikki carb can be worked really well. I'll let others take it from here.

Where in Cali are you. If your in the LA/Orange county area, I'd suggest you simply walk into Racing Beats headquarters in Anaheim and talk shop. You'll walk away with a wealth of ideas.

Conversely, you can walk into Mazdatrix in Signal Hill (Long Beach and owner is Dave) or Rotary Reliability in Santa Ana (owner is Nick) and not only talk shop but they also HAVE a repair shop where you can get your thumping diagnosed as well as anything else that might need attention. Both have reasonable shop rates.
