hesitation

i've been having this serious hesitation after redline shifting through the first two gears. it's like the engine is starving for fuel because when i back off, it stops hesitating. i just replaced the fuel filter a few weeks ago, so i'm confident that's not it. could it be anything besides a weak pump?

it's a '83 gsl, mostly stock besides the RB midpipe. i just tuned it up last week w/ a new cap and rotor and some carb cleaner (but it had the problem before the tuneup).

so i'm thinking it's the fuel pump. if there's anything else i should check before i take it in and have them test it?

thanks
-brad

ps: should i be able to hear the fuel pump at all when i put the key into the on position? it makes a little bit of noise.

yeah. normal?

will these pumps weaken with age, or will they just suddenly up and quit?
