A little info first... I have a 86 N/A that I've put into my Volkswagen Karmann Ghia... I have everything setup and today I tried to start it for the first time. All I get is nice fine misty smoke out of the exhaust... which I'm guessing is just fuel... the motor doesn't actually start at all...just turns over. I checked to make sure I was getting spark and that's all fine... then I noticed there was fuel leaking out of the air filter on my Weber DCOE 45 carb.... so I took the air filter off and there is just a constant stream of furl pouring out of the carb horns.... Now I don't know much about Wankle's....or Weber's... in fact maybe I'm just dumb all around, but this seems like it must be the reason my motor isn't starting.... So any ideas on how to fix this problem will be very helpful.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure the fuel pump I'm using is set for 6psi...

 

thats gas leak from the main fuel bowl. either fuel pressure is set too high or your float is not set correctly. now, its not starting as the engine is flooded. I only use regular oil for unflooding trhe engine as ATF is no good for rubber seals

 

OKay... trying to troubleshoot here. I don't have a pressure gauge, so I guess I'll just have to take the parts guy's word for it that I have the correct fuel pump and pressure.... So, this may be a dumb question, but how do I adjust the float?

Webers don't like much more than 4 1/2 lbs fuel pressure. They are really touchy passed that and will do what yours is doing. Once tried 5lbs on race car, started and ran for a while but ended up loading up and flooding. Fuel pressure gage should be first on your list for tuning.

I disagree with that. I have ran 6 PSI in a 45 sidedraft including dellorto and IDA with no problem. but again, 13-B streetport requires a constant fuel supply.

 

Webers and Dellortos prefer 4 or so PSI, it's possible to run more but if the float is the plastic foam one and it's soaked up a bit of fuel, it will flood. They do need a good bit of volume, though. I'd first get a fuel pressure regulator and cut it back to 4 PSI or so. If it still floods, the floats are misadjusted or sticking. In fact, a quickie check for sticking floats: rap on the top of the fuel bowl right next to the fuel inlet 'banjo' with a screwdriver handle (notice I said rap, not pound!) and if it's sticking that'll usually get it loose without ripping the carb apart.
