Help! Tachometer is possesed!

I've only had the car about a month now. It wasn't running for the two years prior to my getting it.

Ever since I got it running the tachometer has acted very weird. At startup, it acts sleepy, and takes a while to get going.

After the car warms up it starts to do a little better, but tends to lag behind a great deal if I rev it up quickly.

Sometimes it seems to be working normally, but not too often!

Any thoughts on what it could be? Is an exorcism in order?

I have heard people say these tachs have a little bit of oil in them, that can get all gummed up....Not sure how to add oil to it.....but I am sure someone else knows.

You will have to take out the gauge cluster. After you have it removed, you can have a look at the tacho itself.See if it moves feely(i`am sure it wont)If it doesnt, clean it with some surgical alcohol.Dont use any normal cleaner, seeing that it will give the same symptoms after a few weeks. The tacho is just a coil that reacts to the current of the pulses received, the circuit board converts it to a constant signal (current)

Allso check the circuit board for any sighns of burned or damaged components.

If you would like to remove the buzzer,of add a shift light, then this would be the ideal time

Hope this helped

check your timing,, if its good, get a new guage cluster, your tach is bad....
its easier to change the whole cluster and they are cheap $25.00 from the junkyard!
