I have an 84 and just about every time I turn the car off and let it sit over night my power mirrors shift to a new position on their own. Its really annoying. I have to reset my mirrors a lot.
I thought someone was messing with me but it happens everywhere I go. How can this happen with the car turned off? What should I do to fix this problem?

 

that's kind of funny. does the switch move them properly up/down/side to side normally? you could try cleaning the contacts, but it sounds more like gremlins are messing with ya!

 

The switch works fine. I'll clean the contacts anyway.

Any other suggestions?

 

Mine do the same thing. I just got one of those big honking magnified mirrors for the rearview and stopped using the sideview anymore. I have angered the Gremlins (which is a bad thing for a 7 owner to do as they live in the rotor housings.) BTW the sideview mirrors dont work well for me and at least a couple others on our forums being half blind that magnified interior mirror or the one with the array of mirrors seem to be a big help for myself and other visually challenged folks so with good eyesight this may be a great option.

 

I think I figured it out...I shut the door pretty firmly because I have to hold the handle to lock the door (stupid 80's car thing). I think the force of the door closing is causing the mirrors to shift.

Is there something I can tighten behind the mirror so that it won't move as easily?

 

maybe the spring that holds the mirror in place is loose, if you slam your doors does the mirror move around? do the mirrors bounce around while you are driving on rough road?

might be easiest to just swap to some new mirrors from a junker.

 

The mirror switch is not powered when the key is out so I think that your mirrors are bounced when the doors are closed.

If you think otherwise you can disconnect them electrically by removing the two phillips head screws from underneath the mirror assembly to expose the connector.

But I would just open and shut the door a few times to see what happens to the mirror.

I would also think that an overnight drain on the battery would pretty kill the battery....
