Help! ...please
Hi, I'm new to this forum. I live in Utah and I have a '84 GSLSE. My RX-7 has been giving me no end of hassles. Partly because I brought it to the wrong mechanics. It has weird issues with its idle (at heat and warmup), acceleration and deceleration.
When I first start the car it revs to 3000 - 3500, depending on its mood. After a several seconds the RPMs may or may not fall. If they do fall they only fall by 500 RPMs. So if it was 3500 it goes to 3000, and if it was 3000 it goes to 2500, and it remains that way till warm when it will drop down to about 1200 RPMs. While warm the idle will fluctuate between the 750 RPMs it should be at and 1200 RPMs. The fluctuation isn't quick or anything, most of the time the car holds about 1100 but once in a while, at a red light, I'll see different number.
Then there is the acceleration, it's not as smooth and fluid as it should be. Not sure how to describe it, kinda like the engine is fighting something, itself maybe.
The deceleration is SUPER weird! When I let off the gas and pull my foot off the clutch the tach will jump a couple hundred PRMs, and then the deceleration of the engine is slow. Right as the RPMS hit 2000, as they are falling, there is a hesitation, and the falling from there on is un-smooth. Like there is a bit of an oscillation in the fall after 2000. Also to note is that the car tends to make a quite noticeable popping sound out the rear as it decels under 2k.
I think all these issues are related to one another. Since their beginning my gas mileage has gone WAY DOWN. It was about 20 - 22mpg, now it's about 12 - 14mpg. I think this is due to the increased length of high RMPs during warmup and decreased efficiency in the combustion cycle. The real problem is that if this isn't fixed before the end of this month I won't be able to drive the RX-7around anymore because it won't pass inspection.
I was hoping someone might know of an RX-7 expert in the Ogden Utah area, or would know how to hunt one down? I really need to find someone who REALLY KNOWS RX-7s. I brought it to Mazda and they charged me $$$ and then told me they didn't know what they were doing, not to mention they screwed my car up more.

Hmmm, could be any number of things. Better wait for LongDuck, he's the resident expert on the SE's. Just be patient, he'll be along sooner or later....

Do a google or forum search on "solving GSL-SE idle problems" You will find a walk-through that should solve these problems.
IMHO, your TPS and idle screw are out of adjustment, possibly due to a non-closing throttle body.
Once you go through the walk-through, come back and update. We'll be better able to help from there.

I have already found that site your talking about and printed the walk through. After reading a good part of it I was very confident I was way over my head. I'm not a mechanic and I don't understand a good portion of what I was reading, nor do I have all the tools. I'm just trying to find directions to a good mechanic or a site that could give me those directions. Thank you both for looking and posting. I don't know if there is anyone else on these forums that live in Utah, but I hope so and that they'll stop in.
