help my steering wheel has a lil play

hey guys i have had my rex for awhile now and lateley i have noticed that it has quite a bit of play on the steering.how can i fix this problem?is it hard or should i take to a mechanic?alos does anyone have any idea how much i mechanic would charge for something like this?thanx in advance

Don't take it to a mechanic...they won't know the first thing to do with it. There's a writeup on Mazspeed.com that walks you through this one. As long as you follow the procedure exactly it works very well.

Before you get too exicited about messing with the steering box, make absolutely sure that your tie rods and idler arm are in good condition. Most of the time play in the steering is due to wear in those components. If those components are in good condition, then check on the steering box resto on the mazspeed page.

I disagree that most of the time play is in those components. I do agree that they're usually contributing factors.

My steering too has a lot of play in it -- Recently when my car was up on the hoist, I was able to pull on both rear sides of the front wheels, then both front sides and they could both move in the opposite directions, quite a bit :-| Replacing arms as we speak...
