Post it in the FC forum, they might know. They will also share their many experiences with used j-spec tII motors, not all of which are good.

There are really only two ways to tell by looking at the engine.... 1) electrical OMP, and 2) Variable twin scroll actuator on the Turbo(actually the lack thereof for 89-91)...
they've done a good job of hiding both, so I don't know what to tell you...
I know there is a lot of mixed feelings about j-spec engines. I think the most important part in the fight to walk away satisfied, is to buy one from someone you trust, someone with reputation. With some importers its just the luck of the draw as to determine engine fitness, as many as half still have compression. Others are much more tight with their picking and importing, and they only will sell descent ones.
The fact that I haven't heard of these guys may mean nothing, but IMHO I wouldn't buy a used engine from some random e-bayer unless it was dirt cheap

i dont think he could have taken worse pictures if he tried, i would see if you can get more. lmao its 2 different engines, the fan and flywheel dissappears, i wouldnt buy it

I would have never noticed the whole oil filter thing if so didnt say something good eyes (pat on the back)
and in my own opinion I wouldnt buy just for the fact he only has one feedback note and that was as a buyer

Good eyes on the fact that there's photos of two different engines. No wonder they were vague about it.
Buying any engine you can't drive first is scary.

RotaryWorks.com is your J-spec RE leader on the net. We import from Japan through a long time business partner. All motors are guaranteed to start and have the compression tags to prove compression! In Japan my associate uses a Mazda digital compression meter to assure compression. Also some later motors arrive with the wiring harness and ECU. Generally your Cosmos motor and some times 20B have the harness and ECU attached. Turbo 2 motors and FD motors usually do not have the harness attached. Also we import Transmissions in excellent condition. RotaryWorks ONLY imports GRADE A quality motors. These usually come from wrecked cars in Japan or are fresh from the auction! Normal mileage is between 18k-30k miles. We do not get bone yard motors that are sitting in the weather till someone decides to pick up cheap and import. No importer has the quality motors that we import at RotaryWorks. Bar none; we are the leader.
About:
RotaryWorks J-spec RE's come straight from Japan as an complete long block motor. I.e. the motor as a general rule comes complete with alternator, turbos, injection, manifold, omp, flywheel or flex plate. All of the parts on short block are not warranted they are considered a bonus on the motor. Also RotaryWorks DOES sell J-spec long block motors as a short block, or with out certain parts you do not want. Please enquire on pricing for these short blocks. Also there is no core charge on a J-spec motor but in certain instances we can take a core motor on trade. This is handled on a case by case bases.

i have sold several used engines to people on the forum with no complaints!and they are REALLY complete.... check them out @ www.rotaryshack.com under used engines...i usally heve several in stock
i compression test every engine i get, so i know they are good!

actually i was looking at the throttle body coolant hose, the one with the fan has the 89 style, the other motor has the 87-88 style

In the end I went with fc3s.org cause they were quick to respond (so I knew they'd be there is I needed them). Plus, due to a very long wait, they gave me the best motor in the shippment. It even had some descent goodies on it: lightweigt steel flywheel, dual alternator pulley, block-off plates for the emissions. Not to mention the compression on it is really good, and it is really pretty clean internally.
