Help! KYB strut insert

So I bought and 85 FB that came with a KYB strut insert. I guess the guy ran out of time to replace the drivers side one. So the car has been sitting but I am getting it ready for summer an figured I would tackle this. I looked in the manual seemed easy enough.

I have done much other work, to the car so why not.

Anyway, I have everything apart and went to put the KYB strut insert in and put the nut back on the top of the strut housing and it will not go on. Not even close to threading back on!

What am I doing wrong? Shouldn't it fit in and this nut should fit on the top to hold it in place correct? I have no directions from KYB and their tech line is only open on the weekdays.

I checked the passenger side that was supposedly done already and the nut is on the top of that one. I'll be a bit torqued if the guy I bought the car from gave me one strut and lied about doing the other...

If you have an idea please help. Thanks.

bro i just did my 85 yesterday,, ok you took your insert of from your front strut, their was a black nut from the original oil strut right,>?? your kyb strut should of came with a new black nut to hold kyb strut in chamber ,, kyb sits a bit higher just a bit ,so if you have kyb nut it will work if you using the same you have to take a seal or something of the original one to be hollow to sit down further so it can lock in ,,it should screw in alot almost to the end, if anything let me know i just did my front and back on kyb's and it feels so good, much better control love it, and with racing beat spring i think that why it drives better too, not sure if you putting original springs back on,well good luck and let me know,

Well that explains it... No new nut from KYB... I tried the original by pulling the seal and still no go, I may be able to modify it. Hopefully I can contact KYB and get one otherwise. Thanks.

Thank you Thank you, today I was replacing my 83 with 84-85 struts that came from my donor car. The cartridge that I pulled out was leaking and the bottom looked to be missing. I was thinking that the bottom of the cartridge was still in the strut tube. So going through how to get it out when thought lets check the forum and here is your post.
Again thank you.

Yes...it should have come with new nuts for the top of the strut insert.....

When you say leaking.....it's leaking on the top around the shaft or you are talking about the oil inside the strut cover?

If you are talking about the oil inside when you pulled the strut insert that oils it's supposed to be there ........ You need to put oil inside the strut tube before you insert the strut insert so it disipates the heat.....

I think the oil was from within the cartridge based on the hole in bottom and that you can hear it going up and down See photo below

After removing the left side I am very sure these are OEM cartridges-struts where the strut housing is part of the cartridges. My dad had a new 1968 Ford Cortina and do remember being told that you needed rebuild the struts and not replace like I was use to with shocks. If you did replace it was crazy expensive and when replacement cartridges came out it reduced the cost quite a bit. I have done a Google search and found that this is known as a Wet Strut. I had not thought about this until the last few days and took me down memory lane with long deceased father. Here is a link to 1973 BMW that had wet struts https://www.hagerty.com/media/opinio...the-wet-strut/

I had them on my SA originally before I replaced them with inserts. Wish I had them still. You can rebuild them and play games with different oil weights to tune the struts to some extent.
