ummm refer to the rats nest removal tutorial to make sure but If I was you I would make sure to cap those off, they are deffinate vacuum leaks and for the ignitor DONT BUY ONE NEW get a used one from someone on this site, you can get one for about 20 dollars as opposed to 200...

I believe that the tach runs off of the secondary ignitor. So yeah, if your leading ignitor was bad and you just switched with the secondary, you would lose the tach... Congrats on finding the issue (if that's all that's wrong).

As far as the vacuum switches go, if you have a Haynes or Chilton's they will tell you which ones do what. Otherwise there might be a resource online that you can tap into for pictures...

Or, you could remove the rat's nest and not worry about it anymore (which I highly recommend). Oh, I just noticed you're in California.....sorry..

yeah, still got a couple of years till I can remove the rats nest, still gotta pass emisions tests for 3(?) more years... I do think this was the major issue (the ignitors) all thats left now is getting a new one, and doing the timing. thanks again for all of your help.

so, does anybody have a spare ignitor or two that they want to part with?
