Volt meters are cheap.

 

Thanks. I am aware of what a volt meter costs. Mine is many things, but cheap is not one of them. And that's not helping me much. If you read closely, you'll see that I've measured voltage on the 3-pin molex. When ACC is on, I get 12V. When it's off, I get nothing. On the 1-pin molex, I get 12 volts when ACC is on and off (since it's backup, I presume this is correct behavior). When I plug them in, I get nothing to the head. As I stated before, there is a fair amount of stress on the cables when I do this as it doesn't want to come out very far from the dash to allow me to plug it in. This is why I suspect it's a break in the wire for the 3-pin somewhere. The fact that both radios won't power leads me to believe the head units are fine.

Took the car out for a spin this evening and noticed the lights in the stereo all come on with the headlights. At least something's working. :p Taking into a place tomorrow to sort this out.

So the stereo shop did all the same testing I did and they couldn't get the head to power on either. Like me, they were getting power on the 3P plug with ACC turned on. They think it's a dead unit. It's hard for me to believe it as it was just working 2 days ago AND my other unit won't work either (it was also powering on at the time). But I can't think of any other reasonable explanations either. Ugh.

this and the fact they light up, make me agree. i wonder about how the thing is grounded?

 

I was wondering that too. I think the antenna grounds it, but I'm not sure.

Good news though:



I went to pick the car up this afternoon and talked to the guy that did the troubleshooting. I told him that there was a fuse in the radio and the cassette deck.

"No there's not".

"Uh, I had the radio fuse in my hand last night".

"..."

So he busts the radio open and sees the fuse. Pulls it out and tests it. It's fine (as I suspected as I'd seen it the night before). Then he goes to pull the fuse out of the cassette deck. I was going to tell him to not bother...I didn't have the deck connected when I had noticed the problem. He pulled it out and it was blown. :o

He replaced it and everything automagically started working again. I can't believe I ignored the cassette..I was so sure I hadn't connected it, but I guess I had the square 6-pin molex plugged in. Must have blown the fuse when I plugged in a mis-wired aux jack in the night before.

Listened to the stereo on the way home...music to my ears.
