Help with fuel sending unit

My gas guage was not working , so I removed the unit. I tried to do the test with the multimeter (ohm test), but it did not work when on the terminals. However, when I left the one probe on the terminal from the sender, and grounded the other on the body of the sender, it worked. Should I just solder a wire to the unit for the ground? Seems to work fine that way.

Thanks,

Jason
