help with a few issues

greetings,

just looking for comments on three things.

1) for those w/a header, how hot did it ever get -red hot? after getting mine on, and just driving for 10km, i popped the hood and checked out the engine situation. the shiny header is not so shiny anymore. and it is hot!

2) that got me wondering if all that heat trapped under the hood can damage anything during long drives. would it be a good idea to find a way to shield/deflect it? should i care? what might have been done by others here?

3) and finally, besides a failed tach, what are other observable signs of a bad trailing ignitor (vs. trailing coil)?

much appreciation,
norman ng

if the heat concerns you, get a header blanket (not the wrap unless you want to replace the header soon) or send it off to be coated. can't remember off the top of my head who does the coating though.

The header does get hot, but if you see it glowing red at night that isn't good, it means you're running lean for some reason. Under normal temperatures the header will, over time, get less shiny, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a heat shield for my intake manifold as part of my Dellorto setup - if you wanted to, I'm sure you could always fashion your own somehow. Again though, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

no no, not red hot -that's my extreme wondering. i just noticed that it got tarnished quickly. when i touched it, it reminded me of when one grabs and releases a pan handle of a pan that's been sitting on the fire too long. i'm just looking for re-assurance that i'm not going to fry an expensive engine component when i go on road trips.

i'm actually interested in an answer to the ignitor question. my tach does not work but besides that how else can one tell if the ignitor is bad w/o actually pulling it off and testing it?

thanks

i dont know any other way, the test is VERY simple and took me 5 mins at the most, just do it to be sure if its the problem or not.
