HELP carb is shooting flames

Ok I can get the car to start and idle fine but any movement form the go pedal and it bogs, or backfires out carb(fun little 1ft flame).
12a, nikki carb no emssions, no choke.
BTW I let the car run for the entire process(about 40mins)

timing is set at stock specs, FP is at 3psi

At first I adjusted the holley red's regulator to 2.5psi from 3 and same problem.

reset the idle mixture screw on carb( to 3.5 out)

same problem

adjust idel screw to 2out, now it lean popped out exhasut.

I played with the idle screw, from no turns out(still ran?), to 5 out all at various fuel pressures.

all got same results of flames out carb, or lean pop in exhasut. And still can not give any gas without a bog.

Everynow and then I can somehow manage to get it above 2k it starts to rev at a decent rate, but still sounds like its poping out the exhasut. I need to triple check for vaccum leaks but I cant seem to gain any ground on this.

Hate to break it to you but holleys are VERY prone to backfire out of the carb....My brother in law is an insurance agent and people who list holley carbs on classic and muscle cars actually pay more for insurance on holleys over eldebrock or others because Holleys have been linked to engine fires! I am running a holley and occasionally have a similar problem. Good luck, it you fix it tell me how.

Hans has a Nikki carb with Holley pressure regulator.

The popping back through the carb is due to the mixture leaning out when the throttle is opened. That is happening because you have a blocked jet or your accelerator pump is not working.
It is easy to check if the accelerator pump works, just look down the carb (engine OFF) and open the throttle. You should see fuel squirt in both barrels.
Otherwise you'll need to remove the top off the carb and clean it out.

Id really suggest you re check the timing and that your ign wires arent crossed. You getting a too early spark IMHO.

I agree with Carl. But Bruceman is right, too. Check the AP.
A dizzy off tooth, or crossed wires will do that. I have yet to see a dizzy that is not off-toothed, but so out of tune that this will happen.

I agree with what they're saying. Personallaly I'd up the pressure to 5spi and see what happens. 9 times out of 10 the timing is to advanced. Make sure you're reading it correctly and your vacume advance is all connected. Make sure all your diaphrams aren't torn etc.

well heres the kicker, 2 days before yesterday it was running fine, it sat for a day and then i goto fire it up and all this is happening. So its not timing, it must be a jet or AP problem.

I will triple check the timing, spark wires etc, but will concentrate on top end of carb, that seems like the ticket.

Have you put any oil down the carb? (I'm thinking blocked cat as a possibility.)

BE CAREFUL!!! If you try to start it with no exhaust, you SIGNIFICANTLY increase your chances of a fire under the car at the exhust on the ground.

hmm err, how bout i replace the cat with some straight pipe? then try it? I have already seen this car on fire once(not really) id rather not deal with it again.

but thank you for your help, maybe i can get this thing started and running today.

Umm....

My exhaust (currently at the shop having one installed) doesn't EXIST on my car.

It's just a stock manifold......with about 4" of piping left after the pre-cat, or whatever ridiculous piece of crap that is after the manifold.

Its all hollow anyways......so, lets just consider it stock manifold with about 6" of pipe left.

I've been daily driving the car like this since......about March. No problems (aside of the irritating noise).

Why does my car have to be different??? Why can't it start on fire like everyone elses?!?!

If you have been unsuccessfully trying to start the car, and then remove everything from the exhaust manifold back, then guess where all that fuel that you flooded you engine winds up?

I have set my engine ablaze in this mannor, and it is NOT fun!

i flooded the 7 one day and pulled the plugs and started to clean them with brake clean and cleaning the carbon off, when i decided to spray some brake clean on the housings to get some grime off.

Oh yea i forgot the car is flooded, better turn it over a couple of times to make sure its all good. reach inside through window so as to watch if i could see the fuel come out of the ports:
wah wah wah WHOOSH! big fireball that seemed like it was coming for me.

if you are stupid and decide to not disconnect the coils please have a fire extingisher on hand no matter how far the are from fuel, every engine compartment should have one. Luckily it was the brake clean that lit and it only looked to burn the entire driver side of the bay. it died out and left everything intact(felt like Moses) and i sat on the curb and thanked the lord i still had my eyebrows(and all limbs thank goodness)

Lord knows we all have our share of mistakes, but laziness shouldnt be the reason you screwed the pooch.
