HELP! Anyone have an ACV they can send me?

I'm having one helleva time passing the NJ smog test. My HC's are through the roof. I tested my ACV and I have plenty of air coming out the pump but by the time it get's to the split air pipe there's not much there. This makes me think that the ACV could be shot. thoughts anyone?

My car's an 85GS, 12a of course. Does anyone have a known-good ACV that they're willing to part with? thanks!

Bob

Are the ACVs the same between SA and FB models? If so, I have one off my '80 around here somewhere that you're welcome to have, assuming I can find the thing amid the clutter which is my garage.

According to Mazdatrix's site, ACV's are different between series. I really appreciate the offer Mike but it looks like I'll need one off of an 84-85.

you need to make it have port air all the time. the split air pipe hole is very very small, port air is BIG.

i just went thru this on my car, port air all the time made it pass.

There are three air injection points from the ACV. The port air which feeds the exhaust port directly. This happens prior to the exhaust entering the manifold. Then there are two pipes that feed the cats. The smaller of the two feeds the pre-cat and the larger one, also known as the split-air, feeds the largest cat. How do you make the ACV feed the port air all the time?

What kind of visual inspection do they do in NJ? You might be able to get away with just plumbing your A/P directly into the main cat... "The Solution To Pollution Is Dilution"

I'm afraid I don't have a working ACV to give you.. I don't even think mine is working.

I have a quick question to ask you though about the 84-85 ACV... Is there any connection between the ACV and the intake that might explain my high idle problem? One of the guys at the Ottawa meet said that 2nd gens' ACVs have a connection there that puts air into the rear rotor's intake on decel, and that if my ACV was siezed in the wrong position I could be feeding too much air to the rear rotor and causing this high-idle and glowing cat problem. It would make sense... too much air in the rear rotor, no air to cats, front rotor runs really rich...

Anyhoo, I really hope someone can help you Bob, I know I would if I could.

Jon

IIRC there is a passage fro the ACV to the rear rotor on both my 79 and 82 intakes

you have to either hold both diaphrams with vacuum, or take it apart and put something in the to mechanically hold em open. i used a vacuum pump for one, and a valve cover grommet for the other. if you mechanically do it you cant see it from the outside.

also you can build an acv with mixed 12a/13b parts so it has no relief to the air cleaner

Carl is our forum's "misc emissions equipment" collector

An air pump here, an ACV there, an AAB lying around in a box...

Good luck Bob,
Jon

will running the air pump directly to the cat work? If so then in theory couldn't you remove all the rats nest and ****, and when inspection time comes around just put the air pump and braketry back on, run it directly to the cat and be done with it?
