Question Help - 1983 TPS Adjustment

Hi All,

I am having heck of a time figuring out how to properly adjust the TPS on my 1983 rx7. It's a 5-spd manual non-turbo...

I've read through the tutorial in the FAQ section but, as it states, that only pertains to the se model which, if I'm correct wasn't produced till 84+. At the bottom of the post, they talk about a workaround for the 12a model, but I didn't have any luck with that method either.

I've done the whole trial and error thing to no avail... This thing is really starting to frustrate me!

In some of the many different fourums that I've been reading through, people have been talking about setting the TPS using a dual-multimeter method... I'm completely willing to give it a shot, but I don't know the specs to tune it to.

Does anyone know the tune specs for the dual-multimeter method?
What is the specific procedure to tuning the TPS via that method?

Is there something that I'm missing here?

Please help!!! Thanks in advance!!

Sincerely,
Itzezy

P.S. I have tested the TPS using a ohm meter and it is functing properly.

Hi mazdaverx713b,

Thanks for your quick reply! Good question about my TPS... I just replaced my TPS because my old one was faulty. I recently purchased the car and the TPS stopped working.

One things that's a little confusing for me is that the connector for the TPS isn't brown, it's white and it has 3 prongs. The only brown conenctor in that vecinity is a single prong one.

I'll try the voltmeter method this afternoon.

Thanks again!

Do you have a 13B or 12A? There is no tps on the 12As, which was the only engine available in the States in 83.

notice in the pics how the brown connector is tied into the wiring harness with the white tps connector:

the brown one is the connector that must be disconnceted in order for the test to be accurate.

there is a tps on the 12A. it looks very similar to the one for the 13B. its not called a tps, its called a "throttle sensor". its located on the front side of the carb.

Ok, so i must be still missing something.

I disconnected the brown connector (thx for the pics). I went to follow the instructions from the manual listed above (thx for the scans) and i turns out that I don't have a 2 prong male connector with LgY and GY wires coming from it. The closest thing I have, which is located in the same vecinity as the TPS conector is a female one with GY and BR wires coming from it. So, figuring the wire colors have changes since the manual was created, I hooked the tester up to those anyway. The light connected to the GY wire does function as described in the manual although it's more sporatic. The BR wires gives no response via the tester.

Does anyone have any ideas where I should look next?

Thx again,
Matt

I removed mine when I took off the emissions equipment...no change in the way my car runs.
What seems to be the problem with the way your car runs?

No, I don't have the same set of wires that's displayed in the pics above.

I have:
a 3-prong male white conn for the TPS
a 2 prong female blac conn with GY, BR wires

Well, to make up for may lack of knowing there is a throttle sensor on the 12As, I dug out the 83 FSM. For 83 it shows the wire colors on the female side of the throttle sensor to be,

.O..BR
..GR.

The BrR-GY is the check connector.

Don't know if this helps, but those are the wire colors for 83.

...sorry
a 1 prong brown
and a 1 prong white

The problem with the car is that is won't idle. Other than that, it runs pretty smoothly...

thanks,
Matt

OK, then I was testing with the proper connector. Thanks for the confirmation.

What does it mean when only 1 light will come on with the tester hooked up as described in the manual? The light will come on at sporatic momets as the engine is revving up and down.

how far have you adjusted the sensor either way? also, have you checked for any major vaccume leaks off of the intake?
