heater questions

I got thinking about the heater before and I'm wondering, why does the line that feeds the heater box come from the bottom of the radiator? At that point the coolant is the coldest it will get in its path through the engine. Why not take the coolant out at the top of the radiator or at the thermostat housing or something like that, wouldn't that make the heat much better? Is this the way heat is typically done in a car? My Trans Am has the feed lines for the heat coming from the engine and not the radiator at all, this makes more sense doesn't it? This really doens't matter, I'm just curious, this 5 degree weather has got me thinking about it.

Doesn't the inlet hose come from the block, right below the oil filter?

I think that's where mine comes from, and the outlet goes to the bottom of the radiator...

Yeah, the inlet is the hose that comes out of the block under the filter. Then it goes to the heater core where it gets cooled down, and then back out to meet up with the rest of its cool water friends .
