The heating systems in these cars are usually more than enough for even our Canadian winters as long as everything is in proper working order. Is your heater fan blowing a good strong blast? Do the vent controls direct air through the proper openings for where they are set, and are they free of disconnected links that may leave a vent to the outside air partially (or fully) open? Is the firewall free of any air leaks that could allow cold air to enter from the outside?

If all of these check out but the air entering the passenger area is still not very warm you may have a partially plugged heater core. Either that or the heater hoses leading to the core are partially plugged, but in this case the heater core would also be suspect.

When was the last time you had a proper cooling system flush? These engines have smaller cooling passages than piston engines so it takes less crud to **** up their efficiency. This means not only is your engine being cooled inadequately but also the effectiveness of your heating system is reduced.

What I'd do is have the cooling system thoroughly flushed out and replace your heater hoses, both the ones under the hood and the ones under the dash leading to the heater core. Quite often this will be enough to restore the heater's efficiency.

If it doesn't, you need a new heater core. I've saved this point for last because it's the last thing you want to have to replace, seeing as it's such a time-consuming bitch to re and re.

Does the engine warm up okay, or does it run cold all the time? Thinking a possible thermostat issue if it runs cold. Also, make sure your radiator is full.

If you get low airflow from the vents, try switching to re-circ.Often the grill opening in the windsheild wiper housing will get clogged with leaves.Re-circ will draw preheated air from inside the car, bypassing the clog and using warmer intake air to boost the warming effect. The only downside it that its louder and it can get humid/stale in the car with same air recirculating over and over.
If the engine temps are good(1/3 to 1/2) but the airflow is cold, check the heater valve to see if it moves when you select HOT-COLD on the dash panel. The valve should move a fair amount. If it sticks closed, itll hinder water flow through the heater core.If its just kinda sticky, you can help it along as someone else move the selector to the HOT position, then just leave it that way for the winter.
Also,be sure your cooling system is full and there are no air cavities in the system. If you add, flush or refill the cooling system, make sure the heater is on HOT when you do so.That way the heater core will purge all its air while the cap is off and your adding fluid to keep the whole thing air-free.

If your sure the cooling system is full, the engine doesnt run too hot and the fanbelts are tight, but you still only get cold air, then the core is clogged with scale and will never warm up until you change it.You might be able to partially unclog it by reverse flushing the core.
With the heat control on HOT,pull the 2 heater hoses off the firewall and apply a garden hose to the heater hose that comes from the lower radiator tank. This will flush water backwards through the core and force the crap out of the other hose.Do this a few times, then check for flow in the opposite/normal direction by putting the garden hose on the other heater hose.

Aviator is on the ball, remove top and bottom radiator hoses and inspect them, turn on the heating system, run a hose via the bottom radiator hose outlet through the system at a high rate, then from the top outlet through again, this will clean out any blockages. remount hoses and refill with coolant. If it still runs cool check thermoistat.
