Headlight switch not working to close the headlights question

Headlights will go up, but not down. Problem started with an intermittent problem with them not going down, then later they would only go down if I flipped the toggle switch several times and/or pressed on different areas of the switch after it was in the lights closed position. Now the closed setting of the switch has stopped working, e.g. it will open them, but not close them. When I touch the 2 wires on the closed side of the switch, the lights close fine. So my question is: would I damage anything by just wiring in a new toggle switch to the 2 closed side wires, e.g. to simulate the touching of the 2 wires?

I have taken the switch apart and “brightened” all the surfaces and checked as best I know how that everything is making good contact, but apparently something is not making good contact. Thus I am thinking about the toggle solution until I can either figure out why the switch is not working and/or get time to acquire and install a new switch. Your insight will be appreciated.

switch

Yes you can bypass it. Their are plenty of people with the correct switch on the forum, remember to post what year you have. rx7doctor

Many times it is one of the fusible links that are damaged.. Plenty of threads about headlights and fusible links.

In my case its the switch not making good contact on the down circuit - I can use a screw driver to close the circuit on the 2 down circuit wires and the lights go down - but I can not figure out why the switch is not making proper contact on the down side - I have taken the switch apart and used emery cloth to clean all contact - so my question was whether my proposed work around would cause another problem

The up side is working fine
