Have you used this u-joint?

Thinking trying these things I can get these from a place in town. Has any one tryed them? looking at pics of
staked u-joints. It looks like it would be easy for
most driveline shops to do.

I can just order a good replacement one
but after shipping tax, and duty on it.
And the exchange rate.

it might be alot cheaper for me to get them replaced than buy a whole new driveshaft.

They make them for lots of different cars
so they should work o.k.

Thanks

Just had a new driveshaft built for the 84. 275 US. Seems to be ok. the usual problems, 3/8 of an inch long. make sure there is room for the shaft to slide into the trans, check by sliding all way in and i've got 1/2 inch extra. outside diameter was a little biggrrt snd I had to take the zxerk out of the trransmission end to clear heat shierld

Well I was not looking to have the whole driveshaft built, just the u-joints replaced. I talked to a shop in town that sells replacment u-joints for mazda RX-7
and many other makes and he said they sell "hundreds a year" to local mazda dealers mostly for older B-series
pick-ups. he said they were not much harder to replace than any other u-joints.
So I am going to buy some and change them myself
or get a shop to do it for me.
it,s just that I want to fix my car up but do not want to spend lots of money on it.

p.s. thats what I love about this forum all of you guys
have helped me fix so many things that could have cost me lots of money, and its been a great learning tool for me.

Thanks to all of you!!

Well with the help of a friend and my brother I got the
new u-joints in. The driveshaft was easy to get out.
The u-joints took us a few hours to get in.
I thought I would be harder getting the driveshaft
back in but to my surprise I had it back on in minutes.
Its seems to drive alot smoother now.
I just wanted you guys to know that these thing
can be replaced and its not much worse getting
them out than any other type of u-joint.

This is a good to know! A few hours eh? What's all involved? Are there any special tools needed?

If the u-joints aren't supposed to be replacable what makes this kit special?

Thanks for the update!

Those U-Joints are for the 79-83 shafts that have replaceable U-joints. The 84-85 have the u joints pressed in.

I just recently had my driveshaft rebuilt due to the front U-Joint cracking.

I bought the U-Joints for $12 ea. Then took it to;

Drive Shaft Masters Co.
25828 President Ave.
Harbor City, Ca 90710

Owner: Les

He told me that the U-Joints were'nt the best but just to keep them greased.

Balanced and installed for $65.

One of my friends went there with one of the non-rebuildable driveshafts and Les just gave the who said that responses and did it in an hour.

I just recently topped off the tranny because some of it leaked out while i had the shaft out, drove it, and OH MAN !!!

Let me just tell you before I used to take it up to 5600 in 5th and got scared because of the vibration, thought it was from the tranny mount......OH MAN!!!

It made a big difference! BIG hardly vibrated much smoother.

Its worth it! Make sure if you guys get the U-Joints done BALANCE IT as well.

GOOD LUCK

-Ryan

inittab, no special tool's are needed but there are many ways to change them. staking is just a
cheap way to clip the u-joint in place.
You change the way you clip them in.
Almost all u-joints use a clip to
hold them in. Very simple I think model T fords
had almost the same set-up.

This was the first time I have actualy done this
repair. So a real mechanic, with better tools could
fix it easier than me.

I have not balanced it yet but it seems fine

1984se, The link that I put up shows the U-joint that
I used. My car is a 1985 GSL-SE this joint will work in
all 84 to 91 driveshafts.
