So do i!
But my girlfriend discovered the best way to efficiently removed the stuff and usually wont even harm the paint ( it will remove the "overspray" paint).
PB Blaster and any higher end Carburetor Cleaner.
Spray on the PB. Then immediately spray on the Carb cleaner. The stuff just turns to nothing and you can just wipe it off without too much difficultly. May need more PB/Carb if some spots.
But we did the following in about 30 minutes.

lol ... always leg humping before anything else. I've used a similar technique cleaning mine. I just used WD-40 and also like you said it just basically wipes right off. Might also have to hit the heavier spot another time but that should be it. You'll need tons of towls though. I didn't use Carb cleaner though, I just did it all with WD-40 and just washed the engine bay after to get rid of the oil film that it leaves. Cheaper than buying a few cans of carb cleaner.
I hate to sound stoopid but what rust proofing guck are you referring to? Is this an FB thing?
My SA just has some greasy dirt on the inner fenders that I could clean off but its never bothered me enough to deal with it. Certainly never had any rust proofing film on it and I've had since 83.
