hatch glass is not fitting right when closed

when i close my hatch the bottom part with the metal strip sits very close to the body on the driver's side and is far away from the body on the right side, it is even lifted up a little. During rust repair i had to cut out a small cunk of the weather strip under the glass, could this be the cause? I am getting the car painted soon so it can be to close or it will chip the paint.... God bless

Did you loosen any bolts on the hatch while working on it. If not I'd suspect your work on the weather strip. You might have removed enough that it isn't supporting the hatch enough in that spot. Otherwise look at where your hinges attach, do they look even? Is it like it is closed more (or raised up) or does the hatch look crooked compared to the side windows?

it just looks wierd at the bottm where it should match up with the gutter thing. Tha place where it is raised is in the place where i cut out a rusted piece of the strip(thta doesnt really make any sense that it is raised up) i hyave never taken the hatch off, and it has always fit well til now.....

Follow the gap between the glass and the body all around the hatch. It should reveal if the hatch is askew. Adjust for this at the hinges.

Another possibility is that the body is bent. Park on a flat surface and verify that the car is level.

I've heard of hatch struts actually holding the hatch up a little when closed. Might look into that.

If I understand correctly the left side of the metal strip on the hatch is about to rub with the body while the right side still has good clearance. Right now mine has the same problem, the factory manaul states adjusting the glass via the part of the hing mounted to the roof of the car. I really did not want to remove part of the headliner to get to them so I tried adjusting the part mounted to the glass. Bingo, there is some play in there to bring up the glass on the left side. Actually that was short lived, the glass worked its way back down to touching the body. I can work with this being all I need is a nylon spacer over the screw that goes through the glass that secures the hing up top. This will take out the play between the glass and the screw.
