If you get the dash apart, you will notice that the factory used some type of grease on the tach. That stuff turns to jell after all these years. My tach did the same thing when it was cold. It finally got to the piont it was getting worse and worse. I had a couple of spare clusters, so I robbed one out of them. I suppose if you clean the old dialectic grease out, and made sure all the electrical contacts were in good shape, regrease and put back together, it might help. Never tried it myself.

The 79 to 80 tach is the same, regardless of speedo. Same for the 81 to 83. The dash in my 83 is the 130mph dash. The tach I robbed came from a 85mph dash. But I still used an aftermarket tach also. Main reason? I'm 6'2", and the smaller steering wheel made it hard to see. Here's a pic of my setup.
