Has anybody ever made an adapter plate to use a small driveshaft with a big diff?

I bought a driveshaft on eBay and it's the small flange kind. My diff is the large flange kind. I was kinda pissed.

What's worse, after inspecting the horrible horrible front U-joint on my current driveshaft, I had to reinstall it and drive back home!

A square piece of metal, maybe 1/4-1/2" thick, with studs on both sides to fit the appropriate holes. Use nut/washer combo on both ends.

Would aluminum be an appropriate material for the main adapter plate? Or would you want to use something stronger as an anchor for the studs?

I doubt aluminum would have the strength needed there. Also, an adapter plate would effectively lengthen your driveshaft possibly not giving it enough travel. It's pretty easy to swap out the flange on the differential to a small flange.

Honestly, it's cheaper in the long run to take your old shaft down to a shop that builds them and have one made up with new replaceable joints. I recently had a custom driveshaft built for a 1st gen TII for another member and total cost was 217.04.

The only part he used to build a 3" shaft was the input shaft, and I think he could have sourced that also.

Yes, you are correct, he could've sourced the input shaft/front yoke also. Atlanta Drivelines made the driveshaft for my TII first gen and they supplied all new parts. Those Spicer greasable u-joints they used sure are nice!

When I was removing and installing the driveshaft yesterday I checked this and I realized I could do it. Seems like you can push the driveshaft and inch or more into the transmission from where it is when it's bolted up.

I am not sure if aluminum would be strong enough either. But as far as cost goes, I don't see how I could spent more than $40 to build a plate - eight studs, the actual plate, some washers, some nuts, a drillbit, and a tap.

Yes, you can push the driveshaft further into the transmission. The driveshaft is a little bit "short" so that it can float as the rear axle moves. Maybe there is enough extra play for your adapter plate... but if there isn't, the driveshaft will break the rear of the transmission when you hit a big bump. That could be fun!

I have one... would sell it for $25 + shipping. How much was shipping on the one ou got? Something that long usually is considered "oversized".

What year did the person have the driveshaft listed for?

And on the shipping, DHL will ship it without a box and I believe UPS will do the same. I shipped a trans thru DHL and just put shrink wrap around it.

Not to push the point too hard, ok I will, lol. Have a fresh one made up and be done with it for the next 20 years. If you can't find a driveline shop local that will do the work, PM me and I can have one made up for you. You've been burnt once and wasted your money. A second time in these situations tends to really **** me off.

I agree with you, trochoid, but I cannot afford $200 for it right now. Mazdatrix lists theirs at around $250...

There it is. He has a ton of feedback but I haven't heard back from him yet.
