GSLSE and miata trans?

i got a GSLSE w/o a tranmission. I heard you can directly bolt up the first gen miata transmissions. is this true? i found information regarding FCs. but the GSLSE is kinda all to itself with this.

Yeah it is possible. I've done some forum searches in the past since I was interested in it as well. Peejay has done the swap and he's a good source for questions.

Here's the link to the original thread. I'm not sure, but I have spoken to Pete about it before. Different people have different opinions on the idea.

Rob at Rotaryshack really didn't think it was worth it, but other people did.

Overall I think you're getting lucky by finding one out of a smushed Miata.

very true and it figures pete has done it. pete does everything...twice. GSLSE transmissions are WAY to hard to find. so that is my reasoning for doing it.

According to Rob at Rotaryshack

Yes, yes you do have to change the bellhousing.

Don't forget the tail shaft!

hmm....so i basically need a GSLSE transmission to change then. seeing its not likely im going to find just a bellhousing or just the tailshaft. unless someone blew one up in ohio or Pa somewheres

Nope but you can use the internals but the input shaft (the part the goes into the RX-7 pilot bearing) needs be cut or shortened. I cant remember if changing the bellhousing will do it.

I am interested in this as well. Nobody seems to have a GSL-SE transmission and I'd like to replace my current tranny as it's totally screwed.

Hmmm no matter what you're going to need work done.

TII will require a new driveshaft.

Miata bellhousing and tail.

GSL-SE, just find one in a junkyard? Ebay?

You can just use a 12A tranny too. The 12A one is nearly the same except for a little different 5th gear ratio.

Wouldn't a TII transmission also require a custom transmission mount because the FC has a different transmission crossmember location?

This is your answer right here. Least amount of work and will be a direct bolt in. I have a SE motor with 12A tranny, Works fine.
