Question gsl-se w/ non-se transmission

i have a gsl-se and i'm pretty sure the transmission is non-se, since the speedometer reads faster than the car is really going, which tells me the gearing has been shortened.

it has a 140mph speedometer. did all S3 cars have a 140mph speedometer, or was the non-SE cluster equipped with a 130mph speedo? i ask because i wouldn't mind using a 130mph speedo in order to have an accurate speedometer.

or am i way off here?

my non SE has a 140 gauge cluster.. it's an 85 base. You have the right size tires/rims don't you?

Do you have 205-60 series tires on those stock wheels?

That's about normal. You can expect the speedo to read 5-10% too high. The thing to check by is the odometer - that should be rather accurate.

0mph speedometer. did all S3 cars have a 140mph speedometer, or was the non-SE cluster equipped with a 130mph speedo? i ask because i wouldn't mind using a 130mph speedo in order to have an accurate speedometer.
All S3 had the 140mph.

Wouldn't matter anyway, all of the speedos use the same speedo cable revs per mile (I think it's 1000rpm at 100km/h?).

What may have happened is that your tranny has been replaced on your SE with one that came off of a non-SE car. Remember that the SE's had 4.09 rear gears, and the tranny speedo gearing was modified to accommodate for this change.

This is one way that Mazda helped the SE's to do better on the 0-60 times to compete with other cars.

If you're trying to get it to read correctly, you may want to research finding the right replacement SE tranny with the speedo gearing already installed. HTH,

Or you could just pull the speedo gear out and count the teeth. All of the '83-up trannies had the same gear on the trans output shaft - IIRC, 5 tooth. 12A cars (3.91 gearing / 185/70-13 tire diameter) had a 17 tooth speedo driven gear, GSL-SE (4.08 gear / 205/60-14 tire diameter) had an 18 tooth.

The trannies are the same, other than 5th gear. Checking the speedo driven gear is easy, just remove the 10mm(?) headed bolt holding the speedo gear housing to the trans, quickly pull it out and stuff a rag in there to keep too much tranny oil from spilling out, and count the teeth.

edit: Or you could just check the color... 17 tooth is green, 18 tooth is purple. (19, 22, and 23 are red, 20 is black, 21 is white, according to Randy Stocker's site)
