It will feel the same other than dropping rpm in 5th gear due to taller gearing. If you've got a good s4 trans and a bad SE one than swap the tailshafts and be happy.

Top speed would be, in theory, much higher. However, the gearing may be too high for the engines power to overcome, and may actually reduce the top speed attainable in 5th gear. The S4 N/A trans has a very tall 5th gear. Too tall, in fact. (~.700 ish, there were several in that range over the years)

If you do alot of highway driving, it may be worth it. Though the SE trannys had a pretty nice 5th anyway.

You would need a:

S4 clutch and PP
Make a tranny mount
Rework a driveshaft with proper flanges and balance it

There is also an issue with the shifter placement. Basically 2 ways about going at it. Do a search and you will find info on both.

While that's accurate for a T2 trans, this is about an N/A trans.
S3 & S4 N/A use the same clutch.
Swap trans tailshaft housing, and it's a bolt in swap, including driveshaft.

There are minor differences in the gearing 1st thru 3rd, but not much.
http://mazdatrix.com/g1.htm Check there, they have a good spreadsheet on the gearing differences.

I have the 2nd gen S4 N/A transmission in My se. In 5th gear at 55MPH I am only turning 2200 RPM. I believe at around 90MPH I am only at 3800 RPM. There is not alot of power in 5th gear at 55mph.

I have the RB header/presilencer, ported intakes, pineapple racing sleeves and am using the 2nd gen coil set up with 2nd gen leading plugs. Electric fan.
Gas mileage is great at 55 MPH, I am getting just over 29 MPG.

I eventually want to run the 4:44 or 4:78 gears with this trans to see what it does.

I think the 4.44 or 4.78 gears would be a great option with the S4 NA trans. Better acceleration thru 4th, and once in 5th, the final drive ratio will be very close to original.
I have actually thought about 4.88 gears, and an S4 NA trans for my 12A powered car. I can already walk away from my buddies SE, but his T2 catches back up towards the end of 2nd........ Dern hair dryer

so theoretically this should be a good swap since i already have the tranny out and already have the parts lying around.
