Gsl-se tranny noise. Help!!
me and my dad started his car after not being start for more than 2 years so we can try and figure out what this tranny noise was that made him stop driving it in the first place. not sure what it is
the noise only happens when his foot is off the clutch or when he lets it up, while its pressed down it doesnt make the noise, took a vid and put it on youtube, heres the link.

this is what i would do, pull the trans, clutch and look at the fly wheel. See if the clutch and throw out bearing are good, i would get a new throw out bearing. maybe a new clutch and have the fly wheel turned. Most likely the throw out bearing is bad. i think they are like $ 23 dollars at you auto parts store

I would say either the throwout or pilot bearing. My pilot bearing made a somewhat similar noise before cannibalizing itself. Drop the trans and look around.

im gonna try to find some time to drop the tranny to give it a look, but it does shift into the gears fine, as far as when he is driving it im not sure he doesnt want to drive it but if i remember correctly he drove it for a little while while it was making the noise 2 years ago and it was driving fine

I don't agree with the T/O or pilot bearing. Those will make noise with the pedal pushed in. If the pedal is out, the T/O bearing nor the pilot bearing is doing anything. You problem is in the tranny itself. First check fluid level and condition. If the fluid is good, then likely you have a bad bearing on the front part of the tranny. When you are in neural and the pedal out, the front of the tranny is spinning. When you push the clutch in, the tranny no longer spins, so you sound goes away.
My friend has the same issue. It makes noise in every gear (less in 4th). It goes away with the pedal in like yours. We believe it is the front countershaft bearing, but haven't tore into it yet.

when i searched for other problems like min int the forum i found another one where they said that it might be the front countershaft bearing as well, unfortunately it was a old thread so there was no definite answer as to what was causing the problem, i wrote him and asked him but got no response yet

The FSM which again i stated to download a copy of your year by copying and pasting the link will show you everything about how to do whatever repair that applies to your situation.
The changing of the front counter shaft bearing requires a tear down of the transmission and a very large (long jawed puller) to remove the bearing.
Your options are the following.
Take the transmission out and have a transmission shop just replace the front bearing, (something i don't recommend) as if you are going to do that you might as well have the transmission rebuilt as there is the chance that some of the other bearings have or are failing.
Post a WTB thread in the classifieds and get a used transmission. Usually someone always has one for sale cheap.
Keep driving it like that. I had one that had the front counter shaft bearing bad and drove it years like that.
If you do take the transmission out then that would be the time to replace the clutch components.

I agree with gsl-se addict. I had and still have the same problem with my trans, and I replaced both PB and TOB, and it stills does the same thing. It's basically time for a rebuilt or new/used tranny. I also agree with rx-7doc that you can drive it for a long time with the problem, like I am now.
