GSL-SE stalls after 10-15min

Hi guys,

I`m in need of help troubleshooting my 84 GSL-SE.

I bought it more then 2 years ago, but as i was busy with other projects (other rx-7s plus buying a house) i never got around to working on it.

A couple of month ago I finally found some time to take a look at it, and to plan out what needs to be done. I however discovered a very annoying problem waiting for me, one that i was not able to diagnose. So i need your help.

The issue is as follows:

The car starts and idles fine except for needing a new exhaust gasket it shows no engine problems. While standing still it will run without any issues for hours, but as soon as i start driving it, within 5-10 minutes the max rpm that it can go to will start to drop down slowly. It will start by limiting me to 8k, then slowly drop it to 6, 4, then 2k, and then finally it will just stall. If i wait an hour or so, the issue will be gone until i try to driving it again.

The problem shows itself after I drive it, but once it has shown itself, it does n`t meter if the car is standing or rolling, it will stall eventually.

I have tried searching the forums, but was not able to find anything close to this issue.

Thanks in advance.

You shouldn't be taking it over 8k.

It sounds like a fuel problem. Almost sounds like the pump is dieing.

I thought it was a fuel issue at first as well.

However in my attempt to troubleshoot it i did the following test.

I started it, i let it idle till it warmed up, then for 15 minutes i played with the accelerator reving it from idle to 4k rpm, and once in a while taking ot to the redline.
When it didn`t show any issues i let it idle for the next 45 minutes with me testing out how it would rev every 10 or so minutes. It showed no issue.

I then put it into gear and took it for a small spin around the block, around 2 minutes. I never exceeded 3k during the run. When i parked and tested it, it worked fine. I took it for another spin, but when i tested it this time (car parked), I noticed that it wouldn`t rev as high as before. Don`t remamber what rpm it was exactly. I let it idle for couple of more minutes and when i tested it again, i couldn`t get it past 4rpm. Eventualy i couldn`t rev it all, and it stalled soon after.

From what I know the fuel pump works equaly while the car is parked or under load, so i ruled out the pump as being the issue.

PS. I never take it past the red line, but as it`s been a while, I don`t remamber what the exact rpm is. I wrote 8k as i thought it was about that.

change your fuel filter? or its your fuel pump. and if you change it there is a little pre filter thats in the fuel line. some times it comes out when you take the pump off and some times it stays in the fuel line . you mite be amazed how much stuff is in that little pre filter. the best deal i could find for my last pump for my se was on amazon.

first check the spark plugs. i have had SE's with bad plugs exhibit these signs. the metal on the ground points near the electrode can corrode causing running issues under load. i can post a pic tomorrow after i get up of a plug from an SE that exhibited these symptoms.

if the plugs look good, replace the fuel filter. if you are still exhibiting the same issue, remove the dynamic chamber and ensure both injector clips are secure and ensure the pig tails are not broken or that there is no wiring exposed. send the injectors off to be cleaned and flow tested. WitchHunter Performance - Injector Cleaning & Flow Testing Services is who i use. great service and awesome turn around time! as with any other running issues, inspect the cap and rotor button for wear, inspect the air filter for clogs and ensure the inlet duct under the radiator shroud is not full of leaves or debris. check the resistance of your plug wires and inspect and test each coil with a multimeter. they can look good from the outside but can be bad internally.
