GSL-SE Running Rich?

I've been noticing that at stop lights my car really stinks as if it is running rich. This has been confirmed by a friend who told me my car smelled like a gas station after he had been driving behind me. I only had 16mpg from the last tank as well (all city driving mind you). I don't have any mods really, just a header, air pump and cat removal. Other then those things, the car is factory stock. Would the lack of emissions equipment cause the car to run rich?

I have a wideband oxygen sensor setup that I may put in the RX7 to see what the mixtures are. If they are way rich, I'm going to try popping the cover off the VAF and tightening up the spring on the flapper door. I had made a post about installing an EManage in my car but then found that it wouldn't work, so I'm going to have to do it the old fashioned way (assuming you can do this with this VAF).

Does anyone have any input on this situation? Has anyone has a similar problem?

Thanks.

There are so many threads on this subject. Look n the 1st gen archives. As far as adjuting the VAf, yes it's possible and they have a habit of getting out of calibration after time.
The Se runs rich to begin with. In the city they usually only get 15-18 MPG.

taking out the air pump does make it run richer, the ecu no longer sees the air pump air via the o2 sensor, and runs richer, at idle.

and then the cats take away the smell, you took the cats off, its going to smell more. a gsl-se with the airpump and acv stuff and no cat will actually pass the higher rpm part of the smog test without the cat

Correction, the O'2 is only functional in 5th gear for highway speeds on a SE.

That's quite a statement there. What rotary will pass smog in California without the cats, other than an SA, RX-4 and older, regardless the RPM?

where on earth did you get that from?

it looks at the o2 sensor at idle, and its in closed loop between about 1500-3500 depending on load.

it wont pass, it fails at low rpm/speed, and barely passes the high rpms.
