GSL-SE Identification

I know there is plenty of GSL-SE info here, but I couldn't find the answer to my specific question. I went down to the local junkyard today to look for a GSL-SE I could swipe the supension from, so I can put some decent wheels on my '85GS. I found one that has a 13B fuel injected engine, disc brakes in the rear, and the registration says is an '85 GSL-SE (and yes, I made sure the registration was for this car). But the wheels are just like the ones on my GS...did the SE's have these wheels?

Thanks,
Rich

No, the SE didn't have those wheels. I don't know why someone would swap GSL suspension on a GSL-SE, though. Check the VIN on the car. GSL-SE will be like JM1FB332 and GSL will be like JM1FB331. It won't tell you for sure on the suspension, but will at least tell you if it is a real SE or not.

All GSL-SE were produced with 114.3 stud pattern and larger diameter brake rotors including vented rear discs.

Just ideas to check on.

No. GSL-SE's only came with one wheel. See the pic. Check the rear brakes, the disks should be vented if it is truly a GSL-SE.

The VIN is JM1FB3322F0866181, and the registration says it's a GSL-SE, and it does have rear discs, but I didn't notice if they are vented. This isn't sounding good for my plans :-(

Sounds like a real SE, then. Maybe they ovaled out the rims to put on the + rims. Don't know why someone would, but maybe the messed up the SE rims and needed a cheap replacement. I guess you could check if the rear discs are vented. You could use some calipers and measure the lug spacing as well.

Yea that's what I figured I'd do...run down there again next week with a caliper and measure the wheels. Is the 110mm or 114.3mm measurement taken between adjacent holes, or diagonally?

Thanks,
Rich

I am pretty sure it is diagonal. The lugs are drilled on a 110mm or 114.3mm circle.

FYI....
Even if you drilled the GSL rims out the wheel is too small to fit on the larger diameter brake rotor/caliper combo on the SE.

here's a nice pic... easist thing is just to check if the rear disc are vented. I do think the 13" wheel would clear, I've seen 13" on -SE's before, but then there is the "why" factor. It could just be that the owner swaped the suspension himself to a "lesser" model before he scrapped the -SE. What condition is the car in overall though?

Thanks rotor vs. piston...that's makes it completely clear. The car is garbage overall...the engine appears to be in one piece, but the rest of it has been picked over a little bit.

Another somewhat related question. From the research I've done, it looks like all I need to do in order to convert the front to the 114.3mm pattern is to put the brake rotors from the SE on the front...is that right? (Reminder...this is an '85 GS I'm wanting to convert)

Thanks,
Rich
