GSL-SE fuel pump

Hey guys,

Bought a 84 GSL-SE a couple of months ago!!!! Been lookin for one forever and just happened to be in the right place and right time when someone was selling. I've been working on it for a couple of months (bodywork/floorboards, etc.) and unfortunately I never started it on a regular basis.

The problem is that now most of my work is done and I went to start her and although she turns over (weakly caus the battery's not that great) she won't start......

My question is: on the 84 GSL-SE (or any SE for that matter), can you hear the fuel pump working when you turn the key to the on position? On my 82 GSL you can hear the pump working this way, but I'm not sure if it is the same for an SE?

I suppose I could un-hook one of the fuel lines and test this, but it's kinda cold, and I'd rather not do that if it can be helped.

I know that sometimes the compression can become low after RX-7's sit for a long time (ATF treatment, etc), but I'm curious if the fuel pumps for the different years work the same general way........being in the same location etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated.....

On the SE the fuel pump will not work with the ignition key simply turned... the engine must be running.
To test the fuel pump without the engine running... remove the aircleaner cover, turn the ignition on then push in the airflow meter flapper door in... you should be able to hear the fuel pump working then.

Mine sat so long that it rusted up and I had to replace the entire fuel system. New tank, new pump , and rebuilt injectors.

I've got the same year/model! Yea you need to install a jumper wire across the AFM flow switch to allow the pump to run when the ignition is on. There is a connector by the AFM to do this. Look in the FSM to find out how.

On a side note, I've never heard mine run--but the engine is always running also.

Hope you like the car,

Scott

Hey guys, thanks for all the info! I knew I read somewhere that the pump doesn't work the same as in an 82.

Almost finished the underbody work........looking forward to opening her up when she's running! Man, I've waited soooooo long for an SE!

Thx again!
