In several sources, the 86 AFM is supposed to flow more air for better breathing on the 84/85 SE's. The connector is different, but the mode of operation is the same, and you may be able to find one cheaper than $850 at Mazdatrix for an original SE AFM.

IMO, the AFM is a design compromise in the early EFI cars because a MAF works much better with much less restriction. Retrofitting a MAF (hot wire) into your existing AFM setup would do wonders for performance, however... I have given some thought to this idea, but it seems to be too much trouble given the rewiring that would have to work just right to get the car to perform.

well, the 86 afm plugs right in to the se wiring harness.

One sold on Ebay Sunday night for $11. There are a couple guys on Ebay parting out SE's, email them and see if they have the part. Email the guy that has this auction on Ebay.

get one from a junk yard. it cost me like $20 when i got one. you will have to get the intake tube from a 2nd gen too because the 1st gen afm has a smaller inlet into the intake tube. the 2nd gen afm on an -se works fine though.

yah it plugs right in, but the +12v , signal wire and 3 others are the wrong pin location, you better be carefull

EFI is better if its an aftermarket unit, but as far as originl equipment goes the mazda EFI is very primitive

i might be wrong though, as i have never tried this

Yep the 86 AFM is not compatible with the signals for the SE ECU--you're looking for trouble if you do it. Also, the improvement in power will be small making it not worth the risk or trouble. Some guy tried it but was never fully successfull. I looked into it quite a bit and decided to just upgrade to a full TII.
