GSL-SE Diff ratio?

I have a question... I thought that all the GSL-SE's had the same 4.077 rear end gear ratio, but someone (very knowledgeable) was telling me that they swtiched between the 84 and 85 models.

Can anyone prove/disprove this? Is it a rumor, or was this an actual mid-year model change?

Thanks, blah!

I'm pretty sure that the ratios are the same.

answering first questions first...

There *were* two different ratios... early '84 used 4.077 ratio, late '84-85 used 4.083. (Big whoop.) Info gleaned from http://mrmazda.members.atlantic.net/...l#DIFFERENTIAL

To directly swap gears into an '80 rear, you can change the pumpkin out to an '81-82 model no problem. You can also use an '83 pumpkin if you change the driveshaft flange, or use an '83-up driveshaft. All cars '79 to '83 used the 3.909 gearing so there wouldn't be any advantage there, but you can get a limited-slip diff from a GSL.

The axle size changed for '84 and up models, so you can't just swap pumpkins out. If you wanted, you could disassemble the differential and swap the side gears, but why? To do that you'd need an early and a late differential. If you're staying with the 3.909 gears, just use the early pumpkin. If you're swapping in a GSL-SE pumpkin, you could just put the -SE ring gear on the early differential, instead of tearing into it all. (You'll have to know how to set up carrier bearings, but that's fairly easy considering you don't have to mess with the pinion gear settings)

peejay man thanks for the link..

I really didn't know about the interchangeability of the rear gears. I'm thinking about getting the 4.44 gears for mine...M054-27-110A
