Are GSL-SE axles to long for a 84/85 GSL rearend?

Are GSL-SE axles to long for a 84/85 GSL rearend? I want to swap a set of GSl-SE axles I have in to my 1985 GSL so I can have a better choice of wheels. The GSL-SE rearend housing was unusable due to an accident but the axels are ok.

I know the front disc are not a problem to swap.

They won't work unless you use the gsl-se brakes also. The axles are longer from the bearing to the hub flange. If you can't use the let me know I need extras.

also from my understanding the flanges on the housings that accommodate the breaks are different also

so in short no, not swappable

The flanges on the housing, for the brake caliper brackets are the same between the two. I took the axles and the brake setup from the gsl-se and put them on a gsl axle with no issues.

bearing are the same i know that the brakes are bigger on the gsl-se so stands to reason that the brakes may be different also with the axle being longer it also stands to reason that the spacing on the brake disk would be different even though the disk is deeper than that of a gsl. My op ion!

I think respeed sells moser axles for the 84 GSL or GSL-SE and they put what ever bolt pattern you need on them. I think you can even get 5 lug IDK.
EDIT:
Ok just checked respeed. they have them. They come it a 5 lug, but they will get you what ever lug pattern you want.

We can also supply these axles in any bolt pattern, including stock, if you are looking for a stronger then stock axle. Give us a call if you would like to order a special set

All disk brake housings from 1984-1985 are the same. The axles will swap from -SE to GSL. As mentioned before you will need the -SE rotors and calipers as well. The -SE axles will move your wheels outboard by approx 1/2"

Thanks. I have all the bits, just wanted to check before starting the conversion.

I want to powder coat the brake dust shield but I would have to remove a collar from the axel to get the shield off. Do you think the axel will take the heat of 400 degrees for 20 minutes that it takes to bake the powder coating?

The axle would but the bearing wold not. You would bake all the grease out.

BTW, SP louvers look great! I just left you some "Trader" feedback.

Thanks for the info. I could always paint the dust shield. I've been on this kick to powder coat everything I can on my 1985 GSL.

Glad you liked the louvers.
