CA GSL Idle Issues/Exhaust Leak

I got an 84 GSL that has a somewhat major exhaust leak around the cat, tried to locate the leak but couldn't find nothing major, an suggestions? Also I got idle issues it won't sit at 800 like it should, checked all the vacuum lines for leaks with starter fluid, but there were no major offenders. Could the "Vaccuum Leak" be a issue with the carb running too rich? I think it runs a bit rich...thanks

Rotaries run rich so the extra unburnt fuel can burn in the cat and clean up emissions. A vacuum leak causes a learn burn, not richer. If the engine/carb is running rich, then the carb idle may be set to high. Download the FSM and factory carb manual from the link in my sig. Even a small exhaust leak can sound like a major one since rotaries run so loud.

Thanks. I tried the FAQ's or search but the FAQ's didn't really answer it as far as the idle. I'll get the FSM right now.

Try this:

http://sterlingmetalworks.com/tuning_the_nikki.htm

About half way down is a writeup on tuning the idle. This was put together by our resident carb expert Sterling. There are other sections for troubleshooting, and a forum section where you can ask him questions directly. Good luck...

DL the carb manual too. The more you learn about the carb, the easier the trouble shooting is. It also states how to set the idle screw. Turn the screw in til it gently bottoms out, the turn it out 3-1/2 turns. Once the idle is set, check the timing, retime if needed, then adjust the idle screw as needed.
